Hey guys, so today I got cought doing 167km on motorway towards Limerick, and was tolds I'll get a summons to court in few months, obviously for reckless driving. Never been to court or have previous points or offences, what can I expect driving so much over limit? Will they suspend my license for some time and penalty? Thanks, all the info appreciated.

It depends on the mood of the judge on the day could easily get 3 months ban or more

167km is bit ridiculous unless you're rushing to hospital like your speedo was reading like 180km madness

I'd plan for a ban. I'd engage a solicitor, if nothing else it shows you're taking the matter seriously. If this was in Kildare you're fcked.

Was it a 100 kmh limit or 120 kmh?

Even so the courts take a dim view, a doctor was done under similar circumstances IIRC. No point being killed on the way or worse taking someone with you but I'm not sure passing judgement is very helpful to the OP. Pretty sure he knows he's fcked up.

Why were you driving so dangerously on a Sunday morning? It’s lunacy. You know motorists like you put other road users at risk. A Judge should disqualify you for dangerous driving and give you a hefty fine.

So it's alright on a weekday?

If they were done for not having lights on or having no insurance, they’d be fleeced here no matter how much they knew they’d ****ed up. So speeding shouldn’t get a free pass just because it’s ‘cool’.

Definitely get a good solicitor though if you want to have any chance at all.

The point I'm making in no amount of high horsary in this thread is going to change the situation and the OP is looking for genuine advice rather than a lecture.

No amount of high horsery is ever going to change a situation but the point I’m making is that if it wasn’t speeding then the lectures would be flowing freely with nobody to offer any help. And the silly little technicality arguments leaping to the OP’s defence (like the weekday one above) are ridiculous.

To be fair I would have no probably with anyone else doing that type of speed depending the car road condition if there was someone in the Car needing life and death medical attention most people won't too to be fair

A friend got caught doing 181kph in a 120 zone. He was getting a ban but got it down to careless driving, 10 points and a 2 grand fine. Used the excuse he needed his license for work

Thanks for all the advices, no need for lectures now, I do understand what I did wrong and taking full responsibility for reckless driving i'll definitely get a solicitor and be ready to be off the road for a while. Once I get my summon and done with the court i post in here how it end up.
PS someone was asking it was 120 zone not 100 if that makes any difference.

There plenty of need for lectures and most people here hope you get ban I'm hoping anyway just you you know.

Depending on road conditions and traffic, you may get away with a fine and points in a 120 zone. But don't quote me on that.

What age are you, full licence and how long, was there anyone in the car with you, what type of car, nct and tax in order, have you any previous convictions, location and time and traffic volume and weather conditions, what was reason given to the Garda.

Answer all that and I can answer your query

Well the good news is that it's Ireland, so even if you do get a ban, you can keep on driving anyway, because the punishment for driving with a ban, is another ban. and the punishment for driving whilst banned after being banned a second time? Another Ban. T'is grand.

Garda probably did you a favour as you'll likely be able to not bother with insurance or NCT costs now as you'll be banned anyways so no point paying over the odds for the other stuff. Garda did you a favour.

(there's a small amount of sarcasm in what I've said, but unfortunately it's generaly actually true).

That said, assuming you're not a heinous criminal and haven't been before the courts or Gardai in the past, you'll likely get hit with a fine and a few points. If you need to drive for work or are self employed, or can come up with any kind of nonsense reason why you'd need a car (a sick neighbour that you bring to the hospital, even though the sick neighbour may not exist etc.) will get you away with avoiding a ban.

Your fine will be less than €400-500 I'd say. but you'll get the points on the license.

In a previous life I spent a lot of time in the courts locally and the sentences were never as harsh as people make out they will be. Definitely get a solicitor though as it looks a lot better in front of the judge. Most people get a solicitor, so the judge will be used to seeing one. Not having one will just draw more attention to you.

I've also seen people get away with excessive speeding due to certain medical issues. For example, a chap with Crohn's Disease really badly had to get to a toilet. So if you've anything like that, you can try to twist it to your advantage.

Just make sure you never speed again, as you'll find that the second time around you'll be beat to death by the judge. Career criminals get away with 100+ convictions, but normal joe soaps get a warning and after that you're in front of the firing squad if they see you again for the same thing.

Just out of interest what happens to your car insurance after conviction like this? Would places even quote you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,801 ✭✭✭iamtony

I once did 100 mph from Dublin to Northern Ireland. I was young and stupid and luckily enough I wasn't caught. I was showing off in my big 3 litre V6 car we have all been their and I'd guess everyone on this motoring forum has hit 100 mph at least once in their youth.
I'm now reformed and very rarely go above the speed limit. Hopefully op has learned a lesson.
I'd doubt you'll get a ban if you do as advised and get a solicitor. Especially if everything else is in order with the car. I've seen people get away with worse. Good luck!

If he got a ban he would be fooked. Anything less and it wouldn't make a huge difference.

Ah the poor OP, lets all feel sorry for him. Say he he only feels he ****ed up because he got caught.

29, full license for 4 years, my girlfriend was in the car with me, insignia 2.0 2010, taxed and nct in place, no previous conviction or penalty points, weather was great no rain and sunny , time around 12:30pm, had absolutely no reason for it, that was absolutely stupid and reckless driving in which I admit it and she said fair enough for being honest.

What has the speedo reading got to do with anything? Some under read, some are exact, and some over read.

167km/h is 167km/h, regardless of what the speedo says. OP isn't "more wrong" if the speedo reported higher, and wouldn't be any less wrong if a broken speedo said 120km/h.

I know someone who was caught doing 170-something on the motorway one night, having just got off a plane from Germany where they spent a week driving around on many unrestricted Autobahns.

Told the Gard the story and got away with a FCPN.

That’s disgraceful and if anything was right in this country the Garda should have been out of a job.
