    Hi everyone,

My Optical Benefit request has been rejected.
It says "Your total PRSI contributions paid is 254" in the rejection letter.

I am working full time since mid-January 2014.

Is there something I am missing? I am unable to understand it, anyone could help please?

    Contribution conditions
You must have paid Class A, E, P, H or S social insurance contributions.

The amount of social insurance you need depends on your age.

    (1) Aged under 21

If you are aged under 21, you may qualify if you have paid at least 39 contributions at any time.

    (2) Aged 21-24

Between these ages you may qualify if you have paid at least 39 contributions and

At least 39 paid or credited in the governing contribution year (2017 is the governing contribution year for claims made in 2019) or
26 paid contributions in each of the second and third last contribution years. For claims made in 2019, the second last contribution year is 2017 and the third last contribution year is 2016.

    (3) Aged 25-65

From the age of 25 onwards, you must have at least 260 paid contributions and

At least 39 paid or credited contributions in the governing contribution year (2017 is the governing contribution year for claims made in 2019) or
26 paid contributions in each of the second and third last contribution years. For claims made in 2019, the second last contribution year is 2017 and the third last contribution year is 2016.

    Thanks
It seems once 2019 is done, then I will have enough eligible contributions. So I will hold off routine Optical test until January.

That’s the best thing to do.

Send a letter from your employer stating what PRSI contributions you have paid since January 2019 and you will be quailfied for the benefit now.

    Thanks.
My employer is so slow that it will take 4-6 weeks to get this letter. So I will just wait for the year to end.

Or get a Specsavers voucher and have it done for free!

    I haven't seen those lately.
I got it in my post 2 years ago. But nothing recently.

That's unfortunate, my postman delivers the Specsavers free vouchers about twice a year. Ask around, maybe someone you know has some!

My last two eye tests have been with Specsavers (using my PRSI record) and I was very impressed with the thoroughness of the examination.

Worth going into the Specsavers Ireland website. Some stores offering vouchers for free eye tests up to 31 December 19 and others at a reduced €10. Search for the location of the Specsavers you would be going to.

They are good in checking up eyes but become hesitant if you ask for your prescription. Usually I order glasses online to save up money.

I get the free pair that my PRSI entitles me to! Admittedly the frames may not be the sexiest, but as I'm looking through the lenses, I really don't care about that!

I didn't know that we could get free pair with PRSI, I thought it's only eye check up.
So i will wait for another month and get a free pair too.

Thanks so much for telling me this

    No bother!
"Once every second calendar year, you can get a payment towards one pair of:

    reading and distance spectacles
    bifocal or varifocals
    contact lenses (including disposables)

Basic frames are free. If you choose more expensive frames, the department will pay €42 towards the overall cost and you pay the balance. Only opticians, optometrists or ophthalmologists who have a contract with the department can provide the treatment. Please check with your provider."
