I really detest this current virtue signalling, p.c, f**k me too generation of commentators. This is a report in the Indo on the Late Late toy show, an exercise in Western excess if ever there was one.
"Ryan Tubridy did temporarily blind a child however after throwing fake snow in his face and getting it in his eyes and mouth. After going off stage for a minute however, Flynn "the science guy" got his own back - covering the host in sustainable glitter."
It's breathtaking in it's smugness. I presume also that they checked that 'Flynn' was ok with the 'his' pronoun. Can't be too careful these days.

I believe sustainable glitter is made from mica.

Didn't watch the toy dross so I missed all that.

Shame isn't it, *sure I'll catch up on the player.

    * that's a lie.

I'd hazard a guess that it's biodegradable glitter.

The two other beauties they dropped last night, a Barbie type doll that could be either sex you wanted it to be, and a young girl who was talking about her "two mams"

I'm fairly liberal don't get me wrong, but I have to agree with the OP, these things aren't exactly events everyone is going to encounter on an average day, so no need to drop it into the fecking toy show of all shows.

sustainable glitter is an odd one to pick on. glitter does seem to be a hazard that damages ocean life and animals

Ah here it’s not like they are going out tipping buckets of it off a pier or spoon feeding it to a fish.

If you have young children, especially girls, you will soon realise how much glitter there is in the world.

    And it fcuking gets everywhere.

It's a marketing ploy only, I doubt Ryan actually thought it was important, it was a paid for product placement I'd say myself.
Much like most of the stuff previewed on the lls

They had one girl on it that was supposed to be "green aware", they had a game with a conveyer belt and stuff thrown on it and you put it in the right bin, green, black and brown, she basically got everything wrong as she tried to sort it.
Like a lot of others, she could talk it but ran into trouble practicing it.

No I reckon he announced that it was “sustainable glitter” so as not to upset the snowflakes that were tuned in who would be only looking for the chance to vent some of their offended bile.

And yet here we have a cohort losing their **** over it, you'd have to wonder who the real “snowflakes” are, D.

Ah so it has made it on to this thread, a discussion on sustainable glitter and suddenly a comment on racism, lol much.
Luckily enough it was green I think, good job it wasnt a human colour or it might have been racist sustainable glitter.

Well here's one for the Eco rebellious. You know those new sectioned bins they have in a certain multinational burger chain, the ones where those extinction school kids, glitter on face and on the hop from school sort out their dead chips, cups, wrappers, worthless junk served with Kid's meal etc? The same ones that are mandatory in public service staff canteens and elsewhere. I can tell you for a fact that the staff in both my job and in my local fast food joint remove all these separated bin's bags when full, and tip them into... The Same Skip. Chips, paper, plastic, tea bags, the works, all reunited.

this is pretty standard no matter where it is, when people are throwing rubbish into bins which are maintained by someone else. it's a well known issue in workplaces that segregating rubbish is pointless because people are as lazy as sin, and just throw their rubbish into whatever bin suits, which messes up the segregation.

Except that is what they are, microplastics. Doesn't matter whether something is called degradable or biodegradable - they both fragment into micro and nanoplastics, with the latter taking over 100 years to fully degrade if it even lives up to it's name. They'll continue to remain in the environment and contaminate recycling and composting.

There's plastic particles in the plastic bottled water we drink, and that Barry's teabag that you've probably had for tea? Yep you've guessed it - ingesting microplastics from tea made with a teabag (most teabags have what's called polypropylene).

Yeah, I know that. I am but one person and do what I can but I’m not going to beat myself up about everything. I drink tea but rarely buy bottled water. I do what I can. Spare me the lecture.

My tone was completely netural - it's only you who took issue with what was said  I always appreciate it when someone corrects me if I say or do something wrong, I never get offended over being corrected. Maybe work on how you react to others in future.

What is it made out of if it's not plastic in some cases then?

Plant cellulose sometimes. I’m sure unscrupulous manufacturers will say their stuff is biodegradable when it isn’t but genuinely biodegradable glitter can be found:

Sustainable glitter is a good idea, it stops a fairly massive source of microplastics in the environment when you consider all the glitter used in celebrations/schools etc, its like banning those microbeads that suddenly appeared in cosmetics and toiletries a while back, a completely pointless gimmick spewing microplastics into our drinking water.

Imagine being that bitter and unpleasant that you go on an internet forum and whine about people coming up with a simple solution to a source of environmental plastic contamination, the usual whining about virtue-signaling aswell, Boards is infested with these muppets these days and they're the biggest virtue-signalers of all, seeing how many thanks they can get from the other bitter muppets by being the biggest climate-denier or homo/xenophobe in every thread, its getting kind of nauseating reading this forum these days.

So not plastic, but bioplastic. It's still an issue though considering that it can take months, years to fully degrade so still a problem with the negative impact on the marine environment and biodiversity.

Another thing is that there's no absolute guarantee that they'll actually even degrade in the environment, whether in soil or water - just take a look at a biodegradable bag that was still perfect after 3 years: https://www.sciencealert.com/those-eco-friendly-biodegradable-bags-don-t-degrade-as-fast-as-you-might-think
"Through their analysis, the researchers are hoping to raise awareness of what "biodegradable" actually means when it comes to plastic bags – something that can be recycled in the heat and pressure of an industrial facility might not disappear anywhere near as quickly in the natural environment."

Only guarantee afaik is if this was treated similarly to compostable materials that are put into an industrial composting facility where the temperature is high enough for it to fully break down.

Instead of greenwashing plastic glitter, what about just using a hole puncher on paper or leaves as a sort of confetti - unless the goal was to use it as makeup glitter, I dunno facepaints? Something that isn't really needed tbh anyway imo.

Well that's the most nauseating and abusive post in this thread so far. Muppets? Climate deniers? Homophobes? And what's wrong with complaining about virtue signalling? It's hardly a commendable practice, given the holier than thou intentions of those who employ it.
Up to now the posts here have been factual, humorous, entertaining with a touch of irony and tongue in cheek. In a single offensive post you've managed to distort the entire tone of the thread. As the OP I'll explain my position. It seems you can't piss ( or chuck glitter) these days without someone placing it into an irrelevant context. It gets worse when the pisser tries to explain the provenance of his action in advance, the reasons for it, the composition of his piss and the steps he took/will be taking to ensure he complies with epa regulations and social media outrage. As there's someone to take apparently real offence at every observation made these days, (you, for example), it means the art of farce, sarcasm and irony is dead. I was well pleased with the curmudgeonly tone of many of the posts, the factual ones were just that. Yours was factual followed by plain abusive, all the hallmarks if a troll. As the op I request that this thread be closed. You can move on somewhere else I'm sure to vent your spleen. The rest of us were having a harmless chat. We'll reconvene later.

It is legitimate to criticise the exploitation of 'vitue signalling'. It is NOT acceptable to call a contributor to this thread a whore. That is just cowardly keyboard warrior posturing. Sticks and stones, if it makes you feel big. Try looking in the mirror, stand on a box while you're at it. You probably need it. Btw, I've seen your considered opinion elsewhere on boards of other initiatives to help the environment. I quote; " Forget about public transport or provision of cycling infrastructure to relieve congestion or any of that eurotrash," Funny how you leap to the attack on a humorous op about minor trivia such as glitter, Gary or otherwise, while labelling all who support public transport and cycle lanes as "Eurotrash". That you can't engage or express an opinion without personal abusive name calling shows how noxious and immature you really are. I'm far from virtuous btw, but I've never stood down to foul mouth bullies, you are just a typical example.
