Washing Machine / Dishwasher waste trap?

We had plumbers in a few years back as part of an extension. They put the washing machine waste and dishwasher teed together and piped outside to the gully but there is no trap. You can feel the breeze blowing in and I am guessing I am loosing a lot of heat this way.

Is it a requirement or common practice to fit traps.

(we recently had mice and I cant find any route of entry so I am guessing they could climb up a waste pipe easy enough without a water trap.)
