With the announcement that Pennys is to close its doors in February , just saw today that the newsagents Paper Lane are having a closing down sale. Sad to see after all these years.

    Is the site being redeveloped?

Tesco had a recent enough touch up and the hoarding and stuff was improved. Im sure itll get another anchor tenant but Tesco won't want it to be Aldi/Lidl.

    possibly simple retirement?

Many of the stores have been in operation since the 70's and are small independents.

The store is for sale as a going concern for €110,000 and seems to eb profitable - hence probable retirement

1.4m is a decent turnover for a unit like that.

What's the typical margin on stuff in a newsagents though? Once you've paid rent & rates and a full-time staff member, you're down €100k. That's before you've paid services or insurance and taken your own earnings out of it. You'd want a minimum margin of 15% just to break even.

Sounds like a good honest living tbh, but hard work. Fair play to the existing owners, can't have been easy with Tesco right next door. That's a retirement well-earned.
