    Hi folks,

Some very brief guidance needed and sorry for the basic question! Buying my mother a car for Christmas. It's from a local (and seemingly well regarded) independent Dublin dealer (not sure if I can name them?). Now the car has UK plates which came back as all fine via Motorcheck. My questions are:

    - When I pick it up, will it have an IE reg? I passed on my mother's details to the dealer for registering
    - re Insurance, I dont want to give it to her until Christmas (bit of a surprise). Can I insure it under my own policy temporarily?

    Thanks so much lads.

    P

Ask the dealer you are buying it from only he knows the answer regarding registration status.
Regarding insurance ask your insurance company only they can answer your question.

The dealer is required to put Irish plates on the car when selling it to an Irish resident here by law.

Regarding insurance, normally an insurance company will tell you that the car's registered owner will need to be the policy holder so it would have to be your mother. If you already a car and insurance policy on that then you could temporarily transfer that to your mother's car which would allow you to drive it. However that would mean that your own car would not be insured for that period. But it would be doable if you wanted to drive the car home after collecting from the dealer. The alternative would be to ask the dealer if they could hold onto the car for a few weeks until you are ready to give it to your mother as a present.

Obviously the price will either include VRT or not. This is something you’d need to agree before buying and has a huge bearing on whether the car is worth buying or not.

If you passed on your mothers details for registering, this would suggest it would be on Irish plates. As above - a dealer shouldn’t be selling a car on uk reg.
