    I don’t actually mean be Frankie Boyle, Rodney Dangerfield or Billy bleeding Burr, just someone whose moderately witty, has decent banter and is a good laugh. My thing is I’m light-hearted and fun natured but back in school I was like the class clown, but not in a laugh with, more amused by. I was kinda weird and unconvential rather than straight up funny. Would just do weird things. I’m older now and my looks(i’m handsome enough) and where I wanna be mean I’m trying to remodel myself a little. BTW, I’m not a clown anymore but still when I think about why people like me, they wouldn’t say I’m funny even though people initially might get that impression. I watch a lot of comedy, read good books and have a good sense of humour but just feel a bit bland.

    Hardly helpful. Says yer man that landed in here due to the ass thread!

    OP forget being funny, it's about putting your shoulder to the wheel when things are going wrong.

    If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
    If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
    If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
    Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

    If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
    If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
    If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
    Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

    If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
    And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
    If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
    And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

    If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
    If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
    If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
    Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
    And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

    Just curious, from your point of view, what would you do with one if you 'got' one?

    Have one bro. We have a good laugh, we can have a good chat about life and culture and pyshcology and also get on it till 7 am. Watch stuff listen to music together, share what we are reading. The funny thing is more for myself. Just wanna find **** funnier rather than be spoonfed it

    Just be yourself then... if people find you funny it's a bonus, if they don't then f**k them.

    Life is too short for that. :)

    1) What kind of comedy do you currently watch and enjoy?
    2)Can you give an example of the kind of comedy or wit you want to be better at?

    "Funny" is a very subjective term. You say you have a good sense of humour but feel a bit bland, maybe it's not you but the people you're surrounding yourself with, maybe you just have different senses of humour.

    Stephen fry is one of the 'funniest' people I've witnessed, he had a long standing line about the usefulness of bidets - proffering that doing a handstand in the shower was just as effective until someone pointed out to him that the contents of the water running over his face might be less than sanitary... :D

    I think either you have it or you dont.

    I don't but on occasion the mind just sparks into gear and I get it right.

    Relax, dont worry about and let it happen when it happens. It's far better to be sound, than funny

    In fairness you wouldn't have the converse problem if you used a bidet to wash your face, unless the thing hadn't been cleaned properly, so as an engineer I can see the man's Damascus dilemma and have full empathy. (I have a friend who, at this exact moment, would halt raising his pint to his mouth, turn his head very slightly sideways and say "Jim, shut up!". That would crack people up.)

    OP, the best humour is from real life every day chat. If you can see the humour in the mundane, and talk about it, you're nearly there.

    Pretty much what Jim said :D:D:D

    The truth is, "funniness" is entirely subjective; Being with the "right" crowd pretty much makes or breaks how you're perceived, stick to things YOU find funny to begin with and by Jove's sake - don't laugh at your own jokes/punchlines. "Trying" to be funny on purpose is something most people will pick up on immediately, which in turn will most likely design you as a "tryhard" or some other terms kids like these days.

    Why do you need to be funny though, OP? Is it so people will like you or be drawn to you? They can like or be drawn to you for so many other reasons such as being a good listener, empathetic, reliable, non judgemental or just for being a fun person to be around (which is quite different from ha ha ha funny).

    I know people can change or improve on certain personality traits but you'll ultimately always be you as acting, forcing or pretending to be different all the time will drain you and people will spot it anyway. Not sure if this is coming from a need to make platonic friends or seek dates but acquired funny-ness will not make you more appealing. Having more self esteem and liking yourself for what you have and are right now will make you a far more appealing person.

    Just learn to love yourself.

    I used to dislike how shy and socially awkward I was, but I have grown to just see it as part of my personality. Put me into a public speaking position, and I lose all my nerves and shyness, but put me into a casual group setting and I am so quiet that I think I make people nervous :P

    Sure, improve yourself, but everybody's different and I wouldn't let yourself feel lesser.

    It's situational comedy that I always fall for. Myself and the OH have agreed that on Valentine's day that I only get her the cheap 2.99 flowers in Aldi as a token gesture. So last Valentine's eve I went to Aldi to pick up a bunch for 2.99.
    I was heading towards the counter when a guy went before me with one of the big 29 euro bouquets, a box of chocolate and a bottle of wine. He placed his on the conveyor belt as did I right behind him. As the cashier put his through he looked at my bunch then smugly at me paid something like 60 euro. The girl took my bunch and scanned them through and I kinda said in a secretive manner "Oh by the way thise are just to finish off the arrangement I have at home" All I heard was a Titter of laughter from the rest of the queue behind me as the girl replied smiling " your just too smart arnt ya"
