Indifferent circumstances

In a trial Dublin in the 1830's a witness stated that someone died in indifferent circumstances. What would they mean by that - literally that the persons death was unremarkable or is it a euphemism for something else? The trial related to money owed and this persons death was not at issue.

I would read it as being of limited financial means but not broke in that context.

Yes, I thought it might be something like that.

The individual concerned would have been described at one time as chief landholder so I suppose he had a fall from grace of some kind.
