    Hi

I have to buy a couple of mobile phones. Vat will be approx €300. I can put them through my employers account and get vat invoice in company name which will save me the VAT but in what way can I give my employer the money for the phones. I presume I can’t just lodge money into the company account ? Is it legal for employer to buy on your behalf ?

    Thanks in advance.

The only person to have that conversation with is your employer.
Your asking is it legal for your employer to buy something on your behalf, yes but they need to charge your the vat like everyone else when your repaying the money. Go talk to him/her if it's a big company forget about it.

    Thanks for the reply.

My employer is happy to do it, once all ok, but I was hoping to avoid paying the Vat and my employer would claim it back. So I would just give him the ex vat cost

The employer can't claim back the VAT unless the phone is for business use.

Are the phones for personal use by you, or related work you are doing for the business?

It's not ok, talk to your employer, this isn't a question for the internet.

Tax evasion if you don't pay the VAT, IMO

There I fixed that for you.

And in case it's unclear no it's not ok to do as you and the employer propose.

The employer can purchase the phones , put them to business use and reclaim the VAT. They can then provide you with that use for work and and any incidental personal use would not normally attract BIK.

    Thanks everyone for the replies.

It’s clear it’s not ok to do this, good to get clarity on it.

One of the phones would be used for business. My company pays for our phone bill but not our phone.

Thanks again for the advice, much appreciated.
