    Afternoon gents,

How do I value this for Donedeal? 2012, 2 owners, 1.8 petrol automatic, Luna spec, full history and 41k km. It’s like brand new inside and out

There’s only two 3rd gen petrol Avensis’ on Donedeal at the minute, for 8 and 13k respectively (madness imo) Both 1.6 manual.

What do I put this at? I don’t have anything to go off, and obviously I’m not looking to undersell it or end up in the dreamers thread.

    Cheers

Going by my rule of thumb since you have very few reference points with so few being on sale...

Car halves in value every 3 years

Estimating an avensis was approx 32k in 2012
It's now 7 years old, 8 in January.

So in 2015 it would have been 16k, in 2018 8k and has been falling a bit ever since..... So I'm guessing 6k by now for an average car but it has only 41k kms so might be worth a bit more.

Avensis have a decent following so I'm going to say start in around advertising for 9k and take anything around the 8k mark, but interested to see what others think too

That's a tough one alright, with very little else for sale to give you a guide
Assume it has good NCT Duke?

I'd be thinking along the lines of using a new value (which there isn't any more, but a ballpark figure) and my usual calculation is a car will halve it's value every 3 years, so if you place a new value of say 30k on the car, its down to roughly 15k after 3 years and 7.5k after 3 more. Another year drops it to around 6 or 6.5, but with it being a Toyota, I'd stick an extra grand or two on the price as they don't depreciate as heavy as some cars.

This brings it back to maybe 8 or 8.5k, which would seem to be in line with the first one you quoted
Then again, what you list at, and what you get, we all know you'll normally end up agreeing a selling price of 5-10% less than list price
So maybe list at around 9k, hoping to get 8,500 or 8,250?

Get out of my head! Haha. More or less the same idea as yourself alright, just wasn't sure what value they were new, so threw 30k out there :D

    I think it’s a €7k car.

It’s only tested til May Mike, which doesn’t help. There’s a years tax on it more or less, and it’s only €390 which should help I suppose. When I heard 1.8 and automatic my heart sank, I had €750 / €1200 tax in mind!

I’ve caught myself out in the past, underpricing unusual stuff that I thought would stick around for months. I think I am getting a bit out of touch with a lot of values these days, but in the case of this, like I said, there’s very little to go on even if I was to do research.

I didn’t have a figure in mind, but 7/8k is surprising. I would have thought a good bit less. I better get it advertised soon

The NCT is a bit of a bummer alright, especially with it being another 6 months away, but very surprised the tax is only 390 and that should certainly make it handier to sell.

By the way, there are 3 2012 petrol Corollas listed there ranging from 7,950 to 8,750, so surely it's got to be worth around the same money?

Great minds think alike. But we didn't just throw a random number out there, explained the process and arrived at what I think is a decent ballpark figure. I kept calculation on the high side as its a very low miler.

Not a big market for a petrol auto Avensis in Ireland, however it might suit someone looking for a family car with an auto only license recently moved here from abroad. No idea on what to look for it though.

What’s the Road Tax on that car please?

    Edit.

    I see it now €390.

My process is to get the price of an average higher spec diesel one and conclude that the auto box and mileage will help it even though it’s a niche model.

Using percentages etc will only work some of the time. It’s worth pointing out that a 1.8 Luna Multidrive had an OTR price of €36000 back in 2012, which was €5000 more than a diesel Luna. The petrol isn’t worth any extra but the mileage helps it.

    Wasn't there a terra?
Don't know which is higher spec though

Terra, Aura, Strata, Luna, Luna Sport and Sol is the general hierarchy with Toyotas (although there is no Luna Sport for the Avensis).

Terra is very basic, electric front windows and mirrors, CD player, trip computer, manual a/c, VSC, traction control, 7 airbags, hubcaps and no fogs.

    Aura adds alloys and fogs.

Strata adds dual zone climate control, electric rear windows, chrome door inserts, light grey lower centre console inserts, folding and heated mirrors, electric driver's lumbar support, rain sensing wipers and automatic headlights.

Luna adds upgraded upholstery, larger wheels, smart entry and start system, possibly cruise control and Bluetooth also.

Sol adds leather seats and some sort of electric seat adjustment.

This is for the earliest of the Mk3s, they added more equipment as the cars got newer, Stratas got cruise and bluetooth from mid-2010 for example, they changed things again with each of the facelifts.

What they basically did was go down a step on each trim level and kept the same basic spec from the 03-09 Avensis.

    Base model Aura became Terra

    Strata model became Aura

    Luna became Strata

    Sol became Luna

    Sol Luxury pack became Sol

Not exactly, but the specs were broadly similar.

    Hi Duke,

Where do you find these low mileage examples. You do find some fantastic cars. Sounds like another beaut. Best of luck with the sale.

Monasteries and convents. I have supplied a number of religious orders around Dublin with new cars. Many of them now are reducing fleet numbers and switching to hybrid/electric

Dealing with nuns and the likes is easier and much more pleasant than dealing with the general public! They can be delightful. The vast majority of the cars are absolute gems too.

i wonder what the vrt site would value the car at if you were importing a similar model from the Uk

    €4823 for active spec

    €6215 for icon spec

    €6326 for a TR

I wouldn’t be basing anything on their valuation though.

So to update this, I got a surprisingly good offer on this today from a Dublin based Toyota dealer. Took the hand off your man (over the phone).

Now I need to buy something!

    Was I close?

Yeah, you were fairly close. It was much closer to 7k than I had expected from a trade offer. I'm guessing they have someone lined up for it, or they think it will be a very easy sale. Very little haggling done
