Why doesn't R&B stand for Rhythm and Blues anymore?

It's now some weird urban down beat rubbish
Why can't these people find their own name for their music?

Muddy Waters must be turning in his grave.

Leadbelly etc must be appalled. It hasn't meant what it used to mean in decades ffs.

I think the wikipedia page on this topic covers the changes quite well.

The fact that Robin Thicke is considered R&B let's you know how bastardised it has become nowadays.

    No, you’re thinking of “urban”.

So are we saying once you go R&B you'll never go back?

“Urban” is the press euphemism for hip hop, R&B, etc.

the thing is though it's factually incorrect to call this urban mish-mash Rhythm and Blues because that referees to a totally different genre of music

very strange why they didn't come up with their own name for it - creative types that they are.

Much like a lot of the music they're making they've sampled a name for the genre as well.

    Glazers Out!

Musicians don't usually come up with the names of their supposed genre, that's more the journalists and critics.

Does this mean that the more eh, edgy subcategories become “suburban”?

The meaning of words change over time, decimate for example no longer only means to kill every one in ten people in a legion.

Not really given he is best known for a song that was deemed a Marvin Gaye song.
