refund for being given wrong sized component?

I had an issue with my bike where I had to replace my derailleur (part of the gear shifting mechanism on the back wheel) and the Hanger (the piece that attaches it to the frame), there are literally hundreds of different types of hangers, and after going to 3 different bike shops and showing it to guys in each one none of them had one that shape, I thought I got lucky with the 4th shop, as he had one the exact same shape, but when I got home to affix it to the frame I discovered that the space to attach it to the frame with a screw was the wrong size.
I had hoped to have my bike fixed this morning and be able to cycle to work as I usually do but now I'm stuck and will have to rely on public transport, anyways I intend to bring the part back for a refund I just want to know if I am in the right since the guy supplied it to me assuring me it would fit and didn't mention it might be a different size or am I at fault for not spotting it myself?

In the right for what ?

Are you hoping to get more than a refund, or did you damage it putting it on.

Are you pre-empting him saying no to a refund.

I guess im not sure of what you are asking

How about calling in to them and see how you get on first. 95% of the time there is never an issue.
