I think the jnlr is done in a way to favour the industry, it seems to grossly inflate the numbers of young people listening to the radio and it always claims that only tiny numbers of people steam music. Look at spirit radio who do their own independent listenership research and it told them that they have 540k listeners🙄

I suspect this is way off the mark these days. Really only used to allow stations to build rate cards and charge accodingly. Look how awsome I am. Err, how come every station claims to be awsome then?

Before Spirit changed their streaming server, I remember looking at the stats on it - most of the time it was very, very low (10 to 20 concurrent listeners if I remember). Spirit are only pushing their own funding agenda by sharing their own favourable and possibly questionable stats.

Earlier in the year Frank Kennedy from the pirate Hot FM was claiming 30,000+ concurrent listeners online, and people believed it!

Unless listener is defined as "Person aware of the existence of Spirit Radio" then I think the 520k figure is definitely a vast overestimate.

It's like the IMRO awards, where every station seems to win several. They seem to only exist so that everyone can get an award and then boast that they are "IMRO award winning" in their ads.

I think they should go back to the twice yearly survey.

Do the JNLRS give figures on Streaming Services now? I remember you could acsess a fairly basic version of it for free in the past.

Personally I think they should look to be providing the listenership figures as regularly as possible, it gives a most instant feedback, in a world where Social Media dominates you can immediately see the interactions its had, Radio and TV would benefit from more regular feedback from the public.

You see it in the choose radio lobby group press release at jnlr time, something like 83% listenes to the radio for 4 hrs a day but less than 5% use Spotify. Sounds like total bs

I mean, 90% of people I know have Spotify and pay for it, equally, most of them still listen to radio in the car. Not. Sure how they can seriously say such a low percentage listen.
