    Hi Folks,

I have being viewing a 2011 car on Autotrader, the car is based in Wales & has a UK reg.

Emailing the seller, they say the car was originally an Irish registered car but brought to the UK in 2013 & registered there with UK plates.

Seller no longer has original or copy of Irish logbook.

Would I be liable to pay VRT on this car if I were to re-import it back to the republic?

    Thanks,

    Michael.

You shouldn't as it'd be down as exported from the state.

It depends on whether the VRT was recovered when it was exported. If not then none due on reimportation. If yes then VRT charged and a new rev number issued.

It’s very unlikely that it wasn’t reclaimed.

I did this by accident in 2007.

An A4 I brought in was as above, exported previously.

I bought it in cargiant and did no history check as they did a full one.

Some surprise when the VRT was €0. Delighted with myself. Especially as customs lifted it on me as I didn't bring in for a couple of months.

Even got the fine back off them!

So there is a chance the VRT was not reclaimed on export

Was VRT export refund scheme even operational in 2013 ?

    It started in April 2013.

    Thanks for the replies,

I was unaware about the possibility of the owner claiming the VRT back, unfortunately the car is on its's third owner so it may be difficult to find out whether it has been reclaimed.

Do a Cartell check. It comes up if it was claimed back.

I was talking to a guy with an E60 M5 last week which he imported from Isle of Mann. The very same scenario happened to him, no duty due when he went in to pay, the car was originally registered new in Kerry. You can be sure that was a nice few quid.
