Freeview Receiver

    Hi there,

I have a tv with a built in freeview receiver downstairs, which is connected to an old satellite dish. This works perfectly as it is. I’d like to have freeview tv upstairs also, on an older tv.

Can anyone recommend a reliable and reasonable freeview receiver please? Are there specific types that will work with the dish - I’ve seen some comments saying they need an aerial and not a satellite dish.

In relation to running another cable from the satellite to the tv - I presume this should be straightforward and a tv/satellite installation company should be able to do this fairly easily?

    Thanks in advance.

be careful of the terminology. FreeView is the UK terrestrial system using conventional roof aerials, similar to Saorview. FreeSat is the system that uses a satellite dish. You will need a separate connection directly to the dish to run a second TV or box. It is possible the LNB on the dish arm already has spare sockets so you would only need extra cabling.
FreeSat is branded software used on some satellite boxes that allows it to automatically tune channels, has 7 day EPG etc. You can also get Generic FTA (free-to-air) satellite boxes that have more basic functions like now/next tv guide. The third option is a linux based Combo box that merges satellite and Sarview in one, but these need a degree of knowledge to setup.

Thanks for your reply. So it’s a Freeview or satellite box I’m looking for. I’m pretty happy with just basic functions for upstairs such as now/next like you mention.

If its a dish then a FreeSat box is the simplest solution with its own cable run out to the dish. That will not get Irish channel as they are encrypted on that satellite. presumably you have an aerial for those on the other tv
