I need to get a new car as i will soon be travelling 50 minutes each way to work. My budget is around €8k. I was thinking of a 1.6 Focus?

    Yeah, diesel is probably best.
Is it motorway or small roads?
If motorway make sure car has cruise control.

Yep, definitely go diesel. It'll save you a small fortune in tax and fuel. I've a C-Max 2 litre diesel. It's dull but it has cruise control, air con, bluetooth and voice control which is all I need. Servicing costs aren't expensive and it hasn't missed a beat in the four years I've owned it.

If travelling M7/N7 to Dublin advice would be don’t do it and keep the €8k in your pocket.

But seriously get something comfortable and solid on the road and diesel of course.
Vw or Seat if budget allows.

You can transfer your insurance policy, tax can't of course. But just tax for 3 months for small money to save you picking something wrong in a rush just to change.
The focus is a decent car, wouldn't be well known for comfort but wouldn't be bad. If you want a real comfortable car the next class up like the Mondeo etc are definitely more comfortable and a bit quieter. Focus not a bad shout though

    I'd personally go for a Cee'd or Megane/Fluence tbh.

Great value and great reliability from both. Comfort also god in the Megane from personal experience.

The Toyota Auris 1.4 D is worth considering. Excellent fuel economy, adequate performance, reliable.

+1 for the Renault Megane, you should be able to pick up a decent 2014 example for around 8k.

The tax being out for a few weeks is not going to matter. There will be suggestions of diesel here , but id contemplate sticking with what u have or going electric. If money saving is objective , a leaf will get you there for way cheaper than any diesel ...

What are you driving now ?

I'm driving a 1.4 Opel Astra but the engine is giving trouble along with other issues, so have no choice but to get rid of it.
I have a viewing for a 1.6 diesel Focus with 90,000 Miles or a 2l diesel 131 Mondeo with 85,000 miles, so it will probably be either the two...

Are you stuck on much traffic or do you get a good run ?

Are you into cars? If so, get something a small bit different. Alfa Romeo Giulietta? They come with very nice diesels. I have a 1.6 JTDM2 one of these and it's a fabulous car, great engine, plenty of power, extremely comfortable inside, and it always makes you feel that bit special.

The 2.0 JTDM2 engines put out a lot of grunt as well and both are very reliable.

You probably won't come up as high in the years as with a Focus, but I'd go for a nice Audi A3 1.6 diesel if you're doing 100kms a day commute

There seem to be plenty out there around that money, but this S-Line model looks very nice and has a new NCT until Jan 2022 also! It's listed at €8200 on Donedeal

just saw an a 2012 merc s350 advertised on a sponsored ad on instagram, would sort the 2.1L rattly diesel engine , as I assume the s350 is a far smoother 6 cylinder...

How did this thread from asking about a diesel Focus to a Merc S Class?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,655 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

Was wondering the same! At least the Audi A3 I put up is also a 1.6 diesel and within the OP's budget?

If your doing 100km a day whatever you buy the depreciation will be huge....

The Ford engines are solid as a rock I found when I had two mondeos and doing heavy mileage. That said I had no issues with Audi either.

Try get something with a service history. Diesel. Not something at 85k miles and in 6 months you will need to do timing belt. Better off going higher than 100k miles and have timing etc all done. You also get better value over 100k miles as people seem to think cars die after that mileage.....

I would not spend your full budget, keep something in reserve for repairs.

If it was me and I was buying, go with the car you find more comfortable because you will be spending a long time in it. Dont mind the year on the plate. Drop down a year if you get a better spec. You might think +1 on a plate is great but if you go with older model you could get air con etc in your budget. Go with the comfort items.....as I said the number will make no difference with your mileage....sitting in traffic on a hot day with no air con will be painful
