The light on the dashboard is green when you have your normal lights on. Blue is full beams but I think full beam gets knocked off when you turn the engine off so you'd know if you put them on each time. You pull the stalk towards you to out on full beam. Just turn the selector at the end of the stalk to turn on normal headlights.

There is a dial to lower them, which could be your problem. On mine it's to the right of the steering wheel. You should be able to see the lights lowering if you're parked up and it's dark.

thanks a mill, blue does come on for full beams - so do not drive during the evening with these on? i can test lowering and highering later. Green just seems a little light on lights.
sorry, this car is too full of gadgets for me!

I can double check this later as I'm in work now, without the car.

Did you make sure your bulbs are working when normal lights are on? Full beams will be blinding for drivers coming the other way. Only use these if driving on unlit roads and switch back to normal when you see a car coming in the other direction.

thanks again, yes i think iv had the full beams on! blue, with the symbol similar to a fish (?). headlight position in the manual.

The dial should be in the highest position for a normally loaded car, so if you're getting flashed then there's something wrong with the headlight alignment or even with the car suspension (shocks / springs).
You can keep the lights on auto, this is what I usually do, and turn them on manually whenever needed (very rarely).

    shall try the auto button.
past cars, when you turn on your lights initally would be to the dimmed position, hence why i turned them up another notch

Yes, try the auto mode, and if you need them on but the auto mode decides to keep them off, you can turn them on manually as you said, 2 notches from the off position.

You turn your headlights on by turning the switch at the end of the light stalk 2 clicks away from you. I think it may have just been sidelights if you think it was poor illumination.

There's a green light (the right symbol, the other is the sidelight symbol) like this on when your normal headlights are on:

The full beams are turned on by pushing the whole stalk away from you. Pull it back towards you one click to turn full beam off. You pull it towards you from this position to temporally flash the lights.

This is the dial to change the position. It should be on 3 to have your lights shining downwards. If it's on 0 it'll be quite high and could be why others are flashing you.

After taking these pics, I went to collect the wife from the bus stop and only realised when I got home, I hadn't got my lights on. Just the day time leds were on. Luckily it was only down the road. I was wondering why the A/C lights were so bright

I only have this car a while. Had a Fiesta with automatic lights for years. This car doesn't have auto lights. Think I'll just leave the headlights on.

Thanks so much, had dial at 0, thinking this was the lowest
    Thanks for all replies

In an unloaded or lightly loaded car your headlights should not dazzle oncoming traffic when set in the '0' position.

Turning the manual adjustment should only be necessary to compensate for a load (rear passengers or in the boot).

If you have to adjust your lights downwards to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic you probably need to have your headlight alignment adjusted so they are correctly aligned when the manual adjuster is in the '0' position. Otherwise, with any reasonable load in the rear of the car you will not be able to adjust your lights to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic.

You’re probably driving around with dazzling ‘DRL’ on and no back lights, like half the i30s I see every day?

I can only hope not. I shall experiment later. 2 notches in, level at 3.

Fishonabike is correct, actually. My mistake. 0 is the standard. You'd only adjust them if the rear of the car is heavier.

I'd say you had full beams on. So just leave the dial at 0 for now (unless boot is full and/or passengers in the back) and make sure the headlight symbol is green instead of blue and you should be ok.

Every car I've driven has the light symbols on the stalk. They'll have a symbol for parking lights, like the green symbol on the left in Wheety's 1st picture, then they will have the dipped beam, right side of the picture, and sometimes auto. You should only drive with the line on the stalk beside the dipped symbol or auto.

If the car is new to you the lights could be misaligned. A quick check is to park a few metres from a wall on the flat and see where the beam is pointing, mark or note this height, reversing a few meters and the beans should be lower than the mark. The beam should also not be going to the right
