I only rarely come across someone using lime but if youegoing to do it then clip them first. A strip from withers to tail head.

Use Hydrated Lime here. A good handful every couple of weeks seem to do the trick..bit of coughing after it

You can only use it on housed cattle cause when it comes in contact with rain it can burn their skin. We have used it in the past and it worked well. I used a small coal hand shovel to sprinkle it along their back.
Wear a mask when your doing it and best to apply it in an outdoor crush on a dry day. As Robinson said the cattle will cough (dry cough) a bit afterwards.
