E46 touring rear suspension

    Hi all

I have a knocking or rattling coming from the rear suspension of my E46 320d touring. I suspect the shock top mounts are worn out.

How would I diagnose this? I'm thinking that I would jack up the car and try to move the shock absorber by hand?

How would I know if the shock absorber is OK? I'm thinking if it's not leaking, it's OK?

Ballpark, how much would a decent garage charge for replacing the top mounts?
The car is old with high mileage but going well otherwise. I'm thinking about doing it myself as the cost of getting it done could equal the value of the car itself!

I'd get the 4 wheel alignment done afterwards too.

    Thanks.

You can try grabbing the shocks and shake them see if it rattles. You can also visually inspect them and look for gaps between body and the rubber, inside the car and under the wheel arches.

Springs prone to break on these iirc, check them too.

Easy and straightforward job to change them.

Shock condition can be checked better while out of the car, look for heavy oil leaks around the piston and body.
