Born and bred in the banner county. That's a good start anyway. ;)

He should make a good terminal bull. Charolais bulls don't cross well on BWH cows, mousey coloured calves can often be the result which don't sell well. Will a blonde bull give the same result.

I have a ba bull, some average xalves(I’m blaming the cow) and some crackers. The good ones come from bbx or lmx cows

I bought a mature ba stock bull. He hasn’t done any thing yet for me. I am crossing him onto red lm and red sim cows. From what I hear very easy calved cross well on certain cows. British blonde Aqua are not as tall and heavier muscle than the french. Ba x sim heifers with shape are in very high demand. Bulls and bullocks not in as much of demand as other continental cattle. They have very good feed efficiency. Kill out on bulls up to 68%. If anyone will kill them for yea. Good terminal breed. Light boned average feet.

I didn't look your bull up yet lab man, but I imagine he is very low or even negative for milk. As already said they are great cattle to KO, but don't be tempted to keep the heifers for breeding. I have a few BA x AA cows, they bring the quality in the calves but milk is lacking. Best of luck with him anyway.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Had been told a BA x British Friesian is a good foundation for a suckler herd
If your BWD have lots of milk,
Have a BAxHExHO cow with lots of milk and breeds good calves

BA x Shorthorn make super suckler cows. We had a good few of them when I had the sucklers. Crossed back to BA produces great cattle for finising or sale. A well know exporter used to keep in contact to buy our weanlings.

Funny we haven’t had any in years and years. Hardly ever see them in marts here even. I remember one bull we used on milking cows was it Eglington Tim? Anyhow they apparently kill out excellently but don’t weigh accordingly because of lighter bone density compared to the big breeds. Lack of milk in heifers would be a double whammy id think

Yes Eglington Tim was a BA bull and from memory he was UK bred. I never used him as he wouldn't have been the type I would use nor would I have used any UK bred BA bulls at that time. We ran a pbr BA and commercial suckler herd and initially used imported French and Dutch semen and afterwards used imported French stock bulls.

Going back a while there wasn't the same availability.
Was your policy to finish or sell in Marts?

We sold most of them ex farm mostly for the Italian market and in those days you got paid by cash in the yard before the cattle were loaded. A couple of local farmers used to buy a few weanlings for feeding and a good friend always wanted any pb/cross bred heifers that weren't suitable for breeding.

I never went to a mart to sell stock be it pbr's or commercials.

CH, LM or BB are ideal to cross on BAX cows for export quality
    Must try BAxSH
Rather use BA on heifers than LM due to gestation

Sounds like you had fantastic cattle. That’s the dream having lads coming to the yard for them. What did you change to?

Keeping horses on livery in NCD. At that time (1990''s/early 2000) I got €70/hd per week with access to grazing. I supplied hay and straw and mucked out twice daily. The owner paid for coarse feed/ration, Vet and farrier fees.
