SuperValu vs Lidl as employer

    Hi all,

Could anyone share experience of working for either of the two retailers in the Customer Service role?

I was offered two jobs, by both, but SuperValu offered 10.50 p.h. while Lidl is offering 11.90 p.h.

The only difference I see is in the number of hours. SuperValu is up to 39, while Lidl is 30 only.

I am unsure as to what to do.

    Thanks!

I've no experience of either but I'd go with Lidl for the higher hourly pay. The difference over a week is only €52, which means you're working an extra 9 hours for just €52, and I'd be surprised if there weren't more hours available once in the door.

Lidl also have a good reputation for promoting from within and if this is something you were interested in thats another reason to chose Lidl. Having said that the day to day work might be harder as they tend to have less staff on than SuperValu.

Thanks for your reply. I am not sure because the contract says 30 hours only, so with tax, I am not sure whether it's worth it. Another thing to consider is the transport side of it, because SuperValue is 5 mins in the car, while Lidl is 20 mins by bus, so that costs money as well.

I know multiple people who work for Supervalue, they all absolutely hate it and are stuck on awful wages for YEARS

I know a couple of people working in Lidl and they find them to be very good employers - you will be rewarded for working hard but they are fair. I think you are expected to do a lot of night shifts restocking in the first few months to prove you are a good worker and reliable and then they will give you more day work.

I worked for SuperValu only. And if i have to choose would choose Lidl. Firstly, the wage per hour difference, second, you would always get extra hours if wanted, i m sure they pay Sunday Premiums. But you will have to work hard, there would be no time for talking, dossing etc. Lidl would have good structure, guaranteed hours. Supervalu usually private owned, when Lidl is multinational corporation, you would have good chance for promotion, pay increase etc. Hope this make sense :)

Anytime im in super valu the staff seem to go at a fairly pedestrian pace. Not so in lidl.
Depends on your work ethic, but imo a few years in lidl (who i doubt tolerate pedestrian pace) would look better on the cv

Agreed. It kind of depends on what the Op wants from the job.

They could clock in and clock out in SuperValu and take home a bit more money or go in to Lidl work hard and get more experience and have a better CV for it.

1 is not necessarily better than the other and depends on individual circumstances and motivations.

My GF worked in Lidl for a little bit. It was tough. Sometimes it would be after 1 am before she finished. Then expected to back in the next morning. You will do more then the 30 hours and they will call you in to cover shifts and they expect you to come in to cover.

I worked in a SuperValu for 7 years and my pay never changed it was 9.30, unless obviously it went below minimum which it didn’t. Managers would pretend they were thinking of promoting you to get you to take some of their responsibilities, ie ordering stock, giving change to the tills. No extra pay or promotion offered.
They’re also heavy into customer service and politeness so take customer complaints really seriously, and if you’ve ever worked in retail before you’ll know people are absolute terrors for no reason. SV will always side with them, Lidl probably won’t care.

I would recommend Lidl. SV may say 39 hours but the contract will say minimum of 15 or so, so there’s no guarantee you’ll get all those. Particularly in January when it gets very quiet.
