This may not be news to many as I haven't travelled recently.

I checked in for a weekend trip with Aer Lingus. The outward trip was ok but I had to book a seat (14€) to check in for return as I was outside 30 hours of flight. What is the reason for this? I know I could probably do this by phone but I only have a basic one. I didn't want to leave check in until Sunday as my flight is quite early.

You could have waited to check-in at the airport prior to your return flight. The money you paid was for the privilege of reserving a seat.

There is always a check-in desk or self-service machine where you can check-in and get a boarding pass immediately before the flight, this is not Ryanair.
