    Hi,

Could anyone help me get information on fertility testing of bulls?

    - Whats the process?
    - Is all testing/analysis done on farm or is some done in a lab?
    - How long to get results?
    - How reliable is the test?

    Thanks.

A lad who provides this service gave a talk at one of our KT meetings.
Put bull in crush, probe in back end, sample taken.
All the testing/analysis done in the back of his van on site.
    Results given straight away iirc.
As for reliability of the test i'd imagine it reliable once whoever is doing the job is competent.

Probe in rectum. Semen sample collected in to collection jar. Looked at under microscope and you're told whether the bull is good or not. You could also get them tested for STDs which would take a few days to get the results from lab. Depends on the tester I guess! Also how good the sample is. Might need another sample. Pays to note any injuries the bull gets since the last test. It would help you conclude as to why a bull was no good.

Bulls can go crazy after it alright which can make the process painful! Have a good crush and headstock I'd say for safety.

Most vet practices would have someone doing it, as lads said all done on farm. A plug to power the microscope somewhere nearby is all you need. Sample is only hood really for that point in time. Lameness etc today could effect semen quality in.3 to 4 weeks time

If you're buying a bull recommended to get it done by a vet, no comeback if not done by a veterinarian professional.
