The Independent have a slot each week where people seek advice on car to buy having detailed likely mileage, budget, etc.

There is a request to day from someone one who is perfectly happy with their car. However their neighbours have bought a new up market SUV (cost about 90K apparently) and they want advice on buying a car to "wipe the smirk off their face".

Surely this is a spoof or are there really people as stupid as that out there?

That was basically 1998 to the late 2000’s so it’s nothing new. I wonder which of the two has more windows in the front of their houses in Kildare?

I’d say about 50-60 per cent of people have carnivals in their heads. About 10 per cent of people can’t hide these carnivals but hidden carnivals are carnivals just the same.

link? you can wipe the smirk off their face with something a few years old, that was 150k ish new, now yours for sub 30k... Something like a merc s class lwb with big petrol engine...

this keeping up with the jones stuff is comedy. Unless they have bought something really special! an 80k new SUV isnt special, youll be importing a nearly new onehere from the uk in less than a year for probably 55k!

I read it, defo a made up story, like the rest of them.
They are advertisements for particular car brands, nothing more.
Most newspaper articles are actually paid ads these days, not independent journalism.

Journalism now is simply about click bait. Congratulations they got you.

Tho in saying that, that would be about the most irish attitude possible. The celtic tiger never really went away.

Can there be a more middle class county than kildare? I doubt it.

The “all fur coat and no knickers” county.

The “all fur coat and no knickers” county.

Great county. I'm from the North of the county but live in Dublin now, if it wasn't for the traffic along the n4 I'd be back there in a heartbeat.

Could some of these simpletons use Google to price the car on their neighbours driveway and discover their budget is dirt compared to it before they make a fool of themselves.

It's the Indo, nothing to see here.

Indeed, if it were true. Who writes to a newspaper these days? I thought it's taken for granted that almost all those agony Aunt type things are works of fiction.

It's poor advice anyway, a new €90k vehicle doesn't depreciate by 8k per year, it's more like €20-25k in the first year

Ferrari 328, F355, 360 or similar is available for well under €90K.

Personally I'd go for a Bentley Turbo (late 80's), Merc R107 and a 911 Carrera. You'd get the lot for well under €90K, have them taxed for €170 a year and insured for around a grand a year. They'd look a damn site more valuable than another Audi Q7 or whatever the neighbour has. Less depreciation (potential appreciation) as well.

The depreciation will wipe the smile off their face. Just let time do its thing.
