VW Passat coil light coming on

    Hi Folks

I wonder if someone could help I have a 09 Vw passat and the coil light keeps coming on but its not losing power or anything. If I turn the engine off and back on it clears but it keeps coming back. My mechanic told me to drive it hard in 3rd or 4rd gear to clear the DPF filter as this is probably the issue (Havent had time to drop it into him for a look) But I have done that and bought the dpf cleaner that you pour into your tank and it would go off for a day but again reappears.

I rang a company called Terra clean that recondition your DPF but you have to get a mechanic to take it out and they collect it. Its a 3 day turn around so you are without a car for 3 days cost is €330. I cant really be without a car for 3 days though as I commute to work.. I obviously have to get my mechanic to look at it.

Just wondering did anybody have any similar issues? Its not effecting the performance of the car but at the same time its obviously coming on for a reason.

The glow plug light in those could relate to any engine fault. Theres really no way to narrow it down without a proper check by a mechanic. I certainly wouldnt go doing anything with the DPF on the strength of that phone call.

Get the codes read and start from there.

Cheers Lads. Yeah my mechanic just reckoned it was that but hasnt read the codes as I havent seen him. In fairness to him though he does be fairly on the ball I do have 250,000 miles clocked up on her.

is it wired for a hitch?I had the same issue with a vw transporter and it was a connection on the wiring socket that was causing the glow plug light to come on

Ya I've even seen blown brake light bulbs cause it on older model Passat.

I have owned 5 Passats and 2 of them had the glow plug issue, but they were the older B5 and a B5.5. I had a B6 also, like your own, but never had the error on that one, but its a common fault on the earlier ones I know for sure, and it's when the brake pedal switch is gone. Costs about 12 or 14 Euros from memory and you could swap it yourself, but I'm not sure if the B6 is affected

What's with all the conjecture? Just scan for codes and see what's faulty.

I had it in an Octavia, first time it was the throttle pedal implausible signal, second time it was the dreaded overboost.
As you can see it could be any number of faults.

Bought it to garage. The faults were the glow plugs and EGR Valve. He said to change the glow plugs first as they sometimes would bring on the EGR valve fault code plus I changed the EGR valve a couple of years ago and its not losing power. So he reckons its Glow plugs. So if I get then he change them next week.

Happy days as thats a small fix after spending a couple of hundred on my Car a few weeks ago I was stressing about it costing me a load more..
