Do new car dealers have cars in stock?

Probably a daft question but I've never bought a new car before and am now in a position where I want (need) to get one quickly as current car has broken down. Do dealers tend to have them in stock or are there long lead in times? Thinking of a Toyota (corolla hybrid probably) and based in Dublin. I'll phone around tomorrow too but curious tonight.

    Thanks.

Toyota are a very good brand of car, Corolla is a good car. Depends what you are looking for and what your needs are. Nissan Qashqai are good and fairly reliable. Volkswagen Passat are good too. If wanting something more up market an Audi be a good choice. You could be up to 2 weeks to 2 months aprox a month waiting if you buy new to order. Generally they have them in stock look up online nearest motor garages to you that sell them. Some mainly stock Toyota’s, nissans etc

Thanks that's given me some hope - just hard to cope without the car over winter with two small kids, commute etc, so hoping we can find something available fairly quickly.

They’ll have them in stock if you aren’t too picky on colour/ spec. Depends on the model really.

Any decent dealer will have a pre reged car available in a day or two.
Pre reged means it's new with delivery miles and about 10% cheaper than new as discount.
    Haggle it's nearly January .

All dealers would have new unregistered stock. Not always stored on site, but available asap. Shouldn't struggle getting a Corolla in Dublin.

I'd be wanting a bit more than 10% off a 192 pre reg in late November over a brand new un registered car come January.

10% seems alot. I'm looking at a Corolla too and have been checking out the returning fleet cars and demos online and the discount on these with a good few dealers is minimal at best!

Probably doesn't help that I'm looking for Sol spec and there's hardly any it seems.

Op if you only buy a new car every so often I would wait until Jan.

You can buy it now and a dealer that's willing to make a sale will give you a trade car that you can drive over the Christmas . This is a common thing.

Trick is to not say anything until you have driven a hard bargain then bring up if the dealer would lend you a trade car until your 2020 car arrives. The trade car will be an old car but will get you from A to B.

Why does it have to be new?

It's an excellent time to buy pre reg or ex demo cars. Especially without trade in. My last one, which I brought 3 years ago to the month. I went in to buy a brand new car. They had list price of just over 36k for it, was getting it for 35 with no trade in. He had a demo for 30k. Which he'd do for 29k.

A couple of stand offs later, final price I paid was 28k for the ex demo car. I did my research and there was a similar one for sale in garage in Dublin for 28k. Local guy matched it after thinking about it for a night.

I sold my old car privately.

What mileage was on it? You saved 8k on new which is nice in your pocket, but with our registration system, it was probably losing near that in value anyway, so I think it's a good deal for the dealer also.

There was 12k km on it. And I had to settle for a "D" reg. Absolutely agree. It was a good deal, not an out of this world deal. But it was a lot more than the 10% off list price.

Just need to be careful, seems to be common practice now for dealers to pass off ex rentals as ex demos.

Just to follow up on this and the possible discounts available for pre reg, maybe I'm missing something. Brand new Corolla Luna Sport saloon is 30245 according to the Toyota website, plus delivery etc whatever thats likely to be, who knows.

    Here's a 192 ex demo with 1000km's on it https://toyotaplus.toyota.ie/used-cars/ireland/a0Z0X00000WkZLl?Toyota/Corolla/Co.%20Kildare

Looking for 30444 retail price or 28444 with a 2000 scrappage allowance. I presume the "retail" price is the normal cash sale price so they want more for that then a new one is!

And that's pretty much the story for most 191 and 192 used Toyotas for sale via main dealers that I can see, even those with more than 10k on them, tiny savings if any at all over new prices.

I haven't bought a brand new car since 1999 and to be honest I'm dreading the whole process with the salesmen, I'd like a great deal and will happily take a demo if the price is right but haggling with these fellas is not something I enjoy!

OP, I'd be very interested to hear back how you get on if you will update us!
