Separate hot water tank?

I'm in a 2001 house that has a Potterton gas boiler. Upstairs I have a separate water tank that can:
    1) heat water using electricity
    2) accumulate hot water when the gas boiler is running - this is what I'm using

I'm looking to buy a HIVE smart thermostat but they have two options:
    a) thermostat for combi boilers
    b) thermostat for boiler + separate hot water tank

Well, I do have a separate tank but I'm not sure how it's suppose to work since the hot water only gets served when the entire system is running. There isn't a special mode that heats only the water.
On the other hand, it's not a combi boiler either since there is no instant hot water.

What system do I need?
