Taxes on US Purchase

I'm looking at buying a musical instrument for my son which costs €180 including shipping if purchased directly from the US producer, otherwise I can get it from Germany for €285.

Am I right in saying that I will pay 12% Customs duty and then 23% VAT on the US purchase? Which would bring the price up to €250.

How are the duties paid on the purchase? Does the revenue send me a bill or do I have to declare it myself somehow?

    Thanks,
    Barra

It depends but practically whoever imports the package into the country (courier or an post for eg) should hold the package and send you a bill.
They won't release it until it is paid.

Ok so basically if FedEx are delivering, I will most likely get my item as normal but will receive a bill later on with the charges they had to pay to import the item. Is that correct? Will that bill include the VAT? Do I have to pay anything directly to Revenue?

No, you pay first whatever they determine from revenue rules

    Whats their fee?

It all depends but no. It could be stopped at the FedEx warehouse in Dublin airport by their own system and not released for delivery until you have paid. They would contact you using the packaging information. If it is stopped you won't have any real grace period - the courier won't hang onto it or deliver it with money outstanding.

Or it could just be processed as a gift with no duty or vat looked for ever. It depends.

Edit: as above I forgot you will have to pay an admin fee to the importer to process it.

They might deliver it and then come looking for money - it all depends - I think that is more likely with a commercial customer.
