Fixing a gearbox?

My partner is relatively new to driving and he has an Opel Corsa 06 which has cost us a small fortune over the last few months in repairs. The latest thing is the gearbox has gone apparently, which I know was caused by him doing stupid things like skidding around the roads! We are saving for a house, so we don't want to drop a few grand on a new car, but I think the amount we have put into the car recently is ridiculous - thousands basically.

So my question is, how much would it cost to repair or replace it? Or should we just bit the bullet and buy a newer car?

Good money after bad, springs to mind.

for that age of car I would take a chance on a second hand gearbox from a car dismantlers for maybe €250 and another €250 or so to fit it.

The older the car is the more maintenance is required, but being easy on it will help a lot

alternatively get the gearbox repaired by a specialist, could be the same money or a but more
