Exception means payment

    Hello,

I am currently on basic disability allowance (my total income is 203 per week) and am in circumstances that would qualify me for an exception means payment. I have however savings in the bank from when I was working and saving for a possible future mortgage (would have less then 15k in total savings) I was wondering if this means I am not entitled to a exception means payment as I do have the money in savings or if it's my weekly income they look at when deciding eligibility.

    Thanks in advance

An exceptional needs payment single payment to help meet essential, once-off, exceptional expenditure, which a person could not reasonably be expected to meet out of their weekly income.

You need to satisfy a means test all capital/property, except your home, is assessed in the means test.

You won't normally be eligible if you have access to alternative resources, including capital, to meet the need.

With €15K in savings I can't see how you wouldn't have resources to meet the need yourself.

    Thanks ,

It is a one off exceptional need that I/one could not be expected to meet out of my weekly income, that's why I questioned if I was eligible.

I do have the resources to meet this expensive my self, it's just since haveing stopped working I have already had to dig into my savings a few times and I am hoping to return to work in a year or twos time but would not be able to return to my previous career so would need to use my savings to restudy/retrain. I'm just freaking out a bit about the future as I see how quickly I'm eating into my savings , and don't want to end up stuck on disability for life.

You have savings to cover whatever expense this is..

Would be an absolute joke if you were able to set aside your cash pile during a means assessment. It would cease to be a means assessment if that proved to be the case.

Wouldn't surprise me if such nonsense was facilitated though.

There are no disregards for capital for an exceptional needs payment.

Thank you , I have a long way to go on my recovery and zero idea what to do career wise. So if anyone wants to pick a career for me and sort my life out that would be great ;) (any thing with zero physical labor / little standing , that requires very little study as I have a previous BA that's now pretty much useless to me and don't think I'd be able to afford more then a year of college. That their is need for employes in around the country , would be perfect)
