I’m not sure if this is a physical health issue or possibly anxiety related but I’ve regularly being having this issue lately when i nod off to sleep i slip into what I would call a half sleep state where i become convinced I’m choking on something and can feel it in my throat, I wake up gasping and startled, have ignored it for a while but now happening almost every night i nod off, not pleasant to say the least, any tips on what it could be related to, am under a bit of stress lately not sure if it’s related. Thanks

Would it be sleep apnea - where you stop breathing for periods in your sleep?

Thanks for reply, it’s possible, i should explain a bit more, it’s like i dream I’m choking on a battery or a coin for example I panic and my throat closes up then i wake and nothing there, bizarre, I’d ignore it but it’s a nighty occurrence, i had something similar about ten years ago and then just went away, this is going on now about a month

    I'd get it checked out.

That just reminded me OP. It doesnt happen me often but a couple of times Ive woken up gasping for air, I dont know if I actually couldnt breathe or if I was acting a scene in a dream where I couldnt breathe and then woke up.I had no problem breathing at all once I woke up fully. Id imagine it's the latter case, as I doubt I have sleep apnea because I sleep very well most nights. And on nights I only manage to sleep a few hours because of work, i feel much worse than i do on normal nights where I sleep 8 hours.I also don't snore. But Im interested to see if you find out anything though. It's very scary though, I cant believe I didn't remember any of these events happening until you mentioned it, funny how much you forget when you fall back to sleep straight away.

Just looking it up and it seems if you have no other major symptoms you can think of then realistically it's either sleep apnea or anxiety related. I also get Hypnagogic jerks which can also be quite frightening and have issues with anxiety
