Reasons for delaying Christmas Bonus

    Looking for advice.
I'm going to be leaving my job in feb/march of next year. I'm going back to college. I haven't told my employers yet. We're due to get a Christmas bonus in the next month or so. It's usually around 3k. With the way my salary is most of this will be taxed at the higher rate. What i'd like to do is delay that payment until the new year so that i could keep a greater proportion of it.

Is there a reason I can give my employer that won't tip them off about my intentions to leave? I'm up for a contract renewal anyway but I feel like they assume i'll stay. They're accommodating enough usually so unless there was some cost to them (i don't think there is) they'd probably be willing to help me.

Hypothetically if I was getting married next year for instance and would be able to use my spouses tax credits for instance. That's the kind of thing i'm after.

If this is entirely illegal then i'm joking of course. If it's immoral then I'll say my 10 hail marys

Be careful that your manager doesn't smell a rat and decide not to renew your contract or pay your bonus! Leavers often miss out on their bonus.

You could say you want to pay some extra money into your pension but don't want to do it til after Christmas. Or getting some crowns on your teeth. They're fairly flimsy excuses and if you sit down to do the math, probably won't add up.

Yeah i know what you mean. They're pretty good to work for in general. I can't see them not paying it. But then I wouldn't expect them to do me the favour of holding out until January for me.

Is there any kind of tax credit around getting a mortgage or anything?
