Buying an EV

    Hi All

Apologies in advance as I know there are prob numerous threads on this so Please point me in the direction of a thread that may have all this info already

History is our old Ford has died and we are now going to jump and seriously look at an EV - sabe money and environment. Family of 5 three young kids and we had a good look at a Nissan Leaf 171 30 kilowatt at the weekend. Very impressed with it, low mileage and v good condition - retailing at 19k. Looked up everything about the night saver rate for home charging, the home charging grant and the general cost efficiency so happy that we’ll save financiall.

Here’s the thing - I want to make sure I’m not missing out on other benefits. The SEAI grant for example - if I trade in a car at the garage and say the car is now retailing at 19k - can I get this grant to pay a chunk off. The credit union green loan - has anyone bought a car through this. Is the Nissan Leaf the best option for the 20k Mark.

Sorry for all the questions but there is a lot of info out there and I just want to ensure I have all my ducks in a row

    Thanks

The grant is already included in the price, it's only for new cars.

Genuinely where are you going to fit the kids in the leaf?

    Have you child seats.

€19k is too much for a 171 Leaf.

Why would they take out a home improvement loan to buy a car? Credit union is 6.95% apr if you're buying an EV.

@OP have a look an Ioniq to see if it's big enough for your needs, would be better value than a 30kwh leaf in terms of range (but may be slightly smaller inside). You should be able to pick up a 2017 model for 22/23k or so.

I know it's all down to personal taste but why are hybrids and EVS so bloody ugly

    Aerodynamics come first.
    Then style (or lack thereof).

171 Leaf with 30 kWh battery is a decent car.
Would I pay €19k for one, personally no. I’d look for an ioniq but it may be slightly more but worth the additional outlay. You may actually be financially better off buying new with the scrappage that’s available now.

3 kids. Are they in car seats? Will they fit. Did you do a trial run with all 3 kids?

SEAI Grant - new cars. So the second hand price is what you pay. No grant for buying second hand.

Charger Grant - you appear to be aware of this already.

Finance - shop around. I got 5% from my credit union for a green loan 2 years ago but that was for home renovation, not sure they will give it for motors.

Look at the Avantcard option. It’s a straight transfer to your account I believe.

Have you double checked the range and driving style to make sure the EV and the Leaf suits your needs?

Ofter it was because makers were trying to show off that their car was different from the others, or that technology allowed them to do different things with the car - the i3 for example wanted to show off that it had a carbon fibre shell, hence the suicide doors and high stance.

Another issue is that range demands dictated that aerodynamics be absolutely maximised to increase range. So body shape - look at the Zoe for example - often looked different to 'normal' cars.

But if you think a Tesla S and 3, BMW i8 and 330e are ugly - yeah you might have poor taste.

I meant the ones that I might have some hope of been able to afford

    What's your normal driving routine.

Winter range on a 30 kwh Leaf could be problematical if you are thinking of it as a "100 miles range" car.

From trying to carefully read/listen to owner commentary it looks horrid easy to get as low as 80 miles range in winter.

Not an issue if you do less then 80 miles a day generally.

It's also not a disaster if you do 130 mile journeys because a 100 mile range car would still have to stop.

A real pain on 80 to 95 mile round trips though.

    Imo.

OP, look to the UK and check out their prices, as a guide - if you do not want to travel - €400 delivered to your door.
No VRT to pay on the likes of a Leaf or Ioniq.
€19k is just loopy compared to what you could personally import

Leaving aside the economics, How young are the kids - do you need isofix for any of them, boosters, buggy’s etc?
