Currently using a Tesco mobile phone, looking for an upgrade advice?

A friend bought a Nokia phone in Tesco, and Tesco Mobile are the phone company that they use with this phone. They are now looking for an upgrade to a Smartphone. Just wondering can they upgrade to a smartphone bought in another phone store, and still stay with Tesco mobile as their company, and still keep their current phone number, SIM,etc?

Apologies if this sounds a silly question :P

    Many thanks everyone.

Generally no but if they buy in Argos or from Amazon the phone will come unlocked to a service provider.

If they're with Tesco and unfamiliar with smartphones they should probably buy from a local Tesco phone shop because if they have a problem they can go back there and get help.
