CPU Upgrade

My system is about 3 years old, pretty much soley a gaming rig on a 1440p monitor. Downloaded Red Dead Redemption 2 during the week and it would appear that my CPU is a bottleneck to decent performance. Same with Outer Worlds so probably tome to upgrade to futureproof myself a little bit.

This is the guts of my current build:
    CPU
    Intel Core i5-6500 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Processor
    Motherboard
    Gigabyte GA-B150N Phoenix-WIFI Mini ITX LGA1151
    Memory
    Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
    Video Card
EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB FTW Gaming

While the motherboard is basic, ideally I could get away with keeping it another couple of years but that limits my options when it comes to upgrading the CPU.

I've been looking at an i7-6700k or i7-7700k. At the moment, a 6700k is £260 on Overclockers while the 7700k comes in cheapest on Amazon at £330. Looking at some reviews, there doesn't seem to be all that much between them in terms of gaming performance.

Obviously, I'll wait until Black Friday/Cyber Monday to see if I can get a better deal but I suppose my question boils down to this:
Is it stupid to buy a new i7-6700k now considering it's four years old?

I'd go second hand tbh. As it is pretty pointless buying a brand new CPU that is 4 years old and it is only 4 core 8 threads in 2019 and closer to 2020.

Would you consider second hand? There is one on adverts for ~€180

Ya, second hand might be the way to go. Had a quick glance at eBay and Adverts last night but obviously missed the ad above somehow!

You could get a new AMD Ryzen 5 3600 for much the same price as that 6700k
Even paired with a cheap motherboard it should be a better option than the 6700k

That's probably what I would do but I'm not as up to date on cpu info as other posters so maybe someone else can give further advice.

Realistically the 1070 is getting pretty old hat now too, I would get a cheap 2nd hand 6700 to drop in hassle free and then plan a system overhaul in 12-18 months. Cex have the plain 6700 for 140. Any more and I'd be inclined to agree might as well get a b450 and 3600. But right now a 6500 is very limiting.

I have a 1070(With 6700k cpu) and play many games at 144hz but sometimes 60hz at high settings in demanding titles.
I don't see any need to upgrade yet unless moving from 1080p to 1440p

Well, with a 6700 and 1070, you are bottlenecked on both fronts at 144hz in new games. Not in a terrible way, but just more a technical thing. EG if max frames was my goal, a Ryzen 3600 will beat a 6700 easily at settings with a 1070 designed to give max frames, but also, a 6700 could deliver more frames with a card better than a 1070, which at this point is about the same as a £200 1660 super or behind.

A dream combo right now is something like a Ryzen 3600 with a 2060 super or 5700.
