I'd say don't worry about it until after Christmas either way.

Things quieten down socially at this time. Most people don't have time to socialise what with assignments, end of semester projects, revision, and then exams.

After Christmas be prepared for a long break. UCD doesn't start turning its gears again until the last week of January.

There is ReFresher's Day near the beginning of second semester. That gives a whole new opportunity to join clubs and societies.

Certainly, imo, the larger societies are fairly useless for meeting people (Arts, C&E, Law). The only other bit of advice I'd give is to prepare to go balls deep into anything you're joining, but be prepared to ditch it quickly if you get any negative vibe off of it.
