Cost of putting a towbar on a car

I know this might be like asking how long is a piece of string.. but here goes!!
Going changing our old second car that I do some trailer work with. But was wondering as looking for second hand cars with towbars narrow your choice, was wondering what cost would be involved in buying a towbar and getting it fitted for say a 2011 insignia or avensis. Also I have been told that now if you add a towbar insurance companies want the work certified making it more expensive?

They have a towbar for Avensis for €171.
You will need the wiring kit also.

When you get the car you will be able to price up using this site.

With a car from 2011 second hand will be an option.

Best to get a recommendation for a good independent mechanic in your area for fitting. He may prefer to source the equipment himself.

I never heard of that insurance requirement. I have two with towbars with different insurers and no problem.

Sure if you buy a used car with a tow bar you probably won’t have any idea who fitted it.

I got one fitted to a 10 skoda octavia about 6 months ago. 50 for a second hand tow bar and 200 to a local mechanic to fit and wire it. Most places I rang for a new one were 450 euro including the fitting.
You may be restricted with the type of towbar if the car has parking sensors. I believe some aftermarket sensors used to pick up the towbar as a constant obstruction. Not a big deal but something to be aware of.

wanted to add a towbar to a new seat Leon and the main dealer wanted 1200 euro. If I installed a non original one I was told my warranty would be invalid on the car . So now have to wait one more year before a 400-600 towbar goes on .

The difference with an OEM towbar, is that these days it means a lot more than just a bracket. If fitted at the factory, it will likely mean auto headlight angle, different software for your reversing camera to give a new view which hitching up, central ultrasonic sensors being disabled when a trailer is detected, updates to your traction control, lane centering, automatic cruise control, and speed limit display. If your car has self-parking, it can do it with a trailer too.

It may even adjust the engine and gearbox software if you're pulling something heavy.

€1200 is still big money for a towbar, especially if it's just for a few bikes, but you're almost certainly not getting the same spec for €500 aftermarket.

If you look at the post 5 by micks garage in 2019 they say that they have a great selection of Steinhoff bars in stock.

Roll on 5 years and gabbo is coming posts that Mick garage now have no stock of Steinhoff towbars!
