Enterprise rent a car question

    Hi Folks,

I plan on renting a car with enterprise from dublin airport in January from the 11th of July 11AM to 21st Jan 11AM. I plant on renting an astra.

I cancelled my Irish credit card stupidly early and now only have a limit of 1000 dollars with my new US Card as only in the country a few months and building up credit history.

Am i right in saying the below:

With CDW only - Cost is 232 euro if I book online now and they will put a 1750 hold on credit card when I pick up the car which obviously my credit card won't be able to take.

With CDW and excess protection - Cost is 448 euro to book online now and they will only put a 250 euro hold on my credit card.

Any advice would be great or the best scenario to take. Couldn't be bothered taking the excess protection but will if i have to and don't want to be screwed in the airport if i do book online now if the credit card can't handle the hold

First thing to do is to check if your American credit card offers car insurance. Most do, but check. This could save you a lot of hassle. If it does, decline all insurance when booking the car and tell them at the desk you have insurance on your credit card. You should only be charged $250. The staff at the desk are used to renting to Americans, so there should be no surprises.

I'm with Bank of America and Ireland is one of the few countries it doesn't support along with Northern Ireland, Israel and Jamaica. Time to seek out a new credit card i reckon before i get home that will cover it. But if i take it with the excess protection if i do have to go down that route i take it the deposit will be 250 if i dont get the new card?

Interesting. I’ve a couple of cards with different banks. I know with my Chase card, initially it didn’t cover the same countries, but that changed about 5 years ago. Give them a call to make sure.

My understanding is that no matter what credit card you have Ireland is one of THOSE countries not covered for insurance. I have 5 different CC companies in the States, none of them cover Ireland.

Would anyone be able to confirm with the bold above that if i get the CDW and excess protection it will be only 250 hold on credit card?

Forgive me for asking chandler, why have you only 1000 credit? Seems awfully low. I don’t mean to be intrusive, but why not just apply for another credit card, most will have a minimum of 5K from most companies.

I know you said you have only been in the States a few months, but I am nearly positive that companies like Capital One wil give a higher credit limit. You can always just cancel it if not in use again...

I'll actually apply and give capital a go. Bank of America said I can apply in three months for a credit increase on the 1k

    Thi

I’m interested to know what limit you got on your first card. You know everything here (US) is based on your credit score. New arrivals are starting from scratch. My first card was a secured card with BoA until i built up my credit score. Once that happened, my limits jumped very quickly, but it’s a slow start.

If you refuse all the hire companies insurance they block several thousand off your card, the OP only has $1000 limit so will be refused the car.

The only way to get a hire car without having a large sum blocked from your card is to take out the hire car companies full insurance, which is expensive. Anything else and you need a few grand available for the excess on your card.

People seem more interested in discussing credit cards than answering your question.

Be quicker to email Enterprise, at least they'll know.

If it was me I would just keep it simple and book the full cover.

Out of a non airport location I am sure it still only is a 250e deposit on a basic level of insurance. But if something did happen to the car then they would not be able to collect the full excess, which would be a big headache.

Book it provisionally, email them your query and at least you will find out exactly. You will also have this in writing too!
