Move to US - Tax Residency

    Hi all

I moved to the US a couple of months ago and will be starting work shortly. I would prefer my tax liabilities to be in the US rather than Ireland going forward, is that possible?

I am renting out my Irish house so will have to pay Irish Tax on this as I understand it.

    Thanks
    LJS

Revenue's site has all the details on tax residency in Ireland:

    https://www.revenue.ie/en/jobs-and-pensions/tax-residence/index.aspx

and the IRS has details on alien residency in the US:

    https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/determining-alien-tax-status

In addition, your state of residence will have its own rules regarding tax residence; check your state's revenue office web site for information.

For your Irish residency, if your move abroad is permanent and you will not be resident in Ireland at all next year, you may be able to avail of split-year treatment for the current tax year so that your employment income from after your departure from Ireland would not be taxed in Ireland.

    Related question here -

I have been offered a 4 year contract for a role overseas which I am planning to accept (assuming I can get out of the country next month)
It is my understanding that for the 2020 tax year, I would be regarded as tax resident in Ireland due to me also living here last year.

Will I therefore have to pay Irish income tax on anything I earn abroad in 2020? Or would the fact I'm going to be leaving for 4 years have any bearing on this?

    Appreciate any guidance, thanks
