    Hi all
I am attempting to complete my Tax return online. Not very savvy at this and am forever looking for refreshers. I have 2 questions:

    1. For the first time, I am attempting to complete by tax returns online via form 12. However, I am seen conversations here re form 11 and I am wondering do I need to complete both form 11 and form 12 to be fully tax compliant.

    2. I have being completing AVCs for years but have only recently I can claim tax relief. I understand the 4 year returns rule so I guess this applies to AVC returns relief also. Reason I am asking this is that on the AVC section of the tax credits section I notice that there is a section that states "claims from previous years" - can I add all my total contributions in this space, even if they exceed 4 years?

As you see a Dummy's Guide to Tax is badly needed by me. I look forward to your replies

    X

Hello and commiserations, as I am sure you know there are only two certainties in life, death and taxes ;)

Why are you using Form 12? I use form 11 because a) I don't pay tax (paye) on my Irish income but b) I have several other income sources in other countries. So, I have to use form 11 to record my (world wide!) income and make a 'self assessment' return and pay the tax calculated from that by November 12th, about. I am not familiar with the differences between 11 and 12, but I doubt very much if you need to complete both. Is seems from your message that you have made tax returns already, but not via ROS.

I haven't paid AVCs in Ireland, so I cannot help you specifically there. However, if you have declared AVCs in previous tax returns were they not allowed for in the previous tax assessments?

If it says 'returns from previous years' off ye go, fill in what you paid and wait for the reactions.

I have been a ROS user for years, because usually I haven't been in Ireland at the time I should make a return. Generally I find it easy, but in recent years the number of 'ifs and buts' mentioned on the form are a nightmare and 99% don't apply to me.

In a self assessed form 11 there is a calculation of your tax liability on one side of the form near the end and you have to fill in your details at each line on the right hand side. I provide this info because, this year is the first time I found anomalies between their calculation and mine, specifically in their assessment of the USC due and mine.

I phoned them because the form would not let me indicate my assessment and say at the end I didn't agree with theirs. The answer I got from the very polite person I spoke to was 'you must complete your side of the form with our figures and say you don't agree at the end, then we decide if you are right or not'

    I kid you not.

So, be careful, you can be accused of lying....;)
