It seems as if there has been something of a spike in unlawful killings or homicides in Cork city recently (4 in 2019 so far, all happened from July to present) and I wondered how this compared to other years.

To do this, I decided to compile a map of homicides in Cork city from 2009 to present.

Source is local knowledge, Google searches and online news articles, so it's possible one or two homicides may have been missed. Any corrections or other feedback would be welcome.

    Homicides in Cork City, 2009 - 2019 - https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1OSYa1qt3IMIsYC8oFrvGCMAALmLXKHYH&usp=sharing

    Summary:
    - The average homicide per year is 1.6, median 2 and the 4 homicides in 2019 is the highest number in the year range. There were no homicides in 2009 or 2014.
    - 22% were shot dead, 33% were fatally stabbed (including a machete attack) and the remaining 45% were killed by Blunt Force Trauma, also known as non-penetrating trauma.
    - There does not appear to be any particular geographic clustering (e.g., Northside v Southside).
    - 77% of the victims were male.
    - The average age of the victims is 40.9, the median is similar at 40.5.
    - Only one child (<18) was a homicide victim.
    - Only one pensioner (65+) was a homicide victim.
    - There have been no instances where more than one person was killed in a single incident.
    - For homicides from 2009 to 2017 (sample size 12), 9 or 75% have resulted in a conviction of either murder or manslaughter (it's too early to include 2018 and 2019 as investigations are "fresh" and ongoing).

    Very very interesting, thank you.

What I get from the above is that Cork is a very safe place, at least in terms of threat to life. Its easy to forget that when you listen to local radio/ news daily

    Very interesting well done.

The only one I would put a star on is Graham Johnson as it was a very specialised location and not really to do with Cork (even if he is a Bandon man).
Speaking of which, if you cast the net wider, there's a rake of murders around Cork. Anne Corcoran or Jonathan Duke to name 2 in the last 10 years.

I've updated the map (link same as in OP), increasing the range from the year 2000 to present.

I've counted 36 homicides in total in that time period although I'm almost certain I'm missing one or two that didn't show up in internet searches.

Some observations on the updated map:

    Manner of Death

    Stabbed/Sharp force trauma: 36%
    Blunt force trauma: 25%
    Shot: 22%
    Strangled/Asphyxiated: 14%
    Other: 0%
    Unknown (from public information): 3%

Refers to cause of death. A victim may have been stabbed and also subject to blunt force trauma (e.g., punched and kicked) but the cause of the fatal injuries (from publicly available information) is what is categorised here.

    Age and Sex

    Average Age: 36
    Median Age: 33
    Sex: 72% male, 28% female.

    Homicide Solve Rate:

    N = 29*

    Solved/Resulted in conviction(s): 76%
    Unsolved/No conviction: 24%

*A case of murder-suicide is excluded as are homicides from 2018 - 2019 as these cases are still "fresh" with investigations ongoing. Homicides where the assailant was subsequently found 'not guilty' due to insanity are included in the "solved" category.

Most of the unsolved homicides are drug-related gun killings.
