Will a dealer buy my car?

    Hi lads,

Just a quick question. I am leaving the country soon and I have a car worth approx 18-20k (no finance owed). I’d be looking to sell it fairly quickly so I was wondering what the chances are that a dealer would buy it at a reduced price.

Would I have much chance of selling it privately?

It’s a 151 Mercedes CLA, with FSH and only 40,000 km on the clock.

    Thanks for any help.

    :)

What do you mean by ‘reduced’?

A dealer will mean about half that.

Some other poster have sold cars that price privately with no issues. You could buy a third party warranty for it too for a few hundred to settle buyers concerns.

Alternatively, ask everyone you know if they plan the buy a new car in the new year - and sell them the Merc to be used as a trade in.

Dealer will offer less for sure, but will be a much better offer than you would get.

You'll sell it privately once you price it cheap enough. I think even selling it cheap privately you will get more than a dealer will offer you for it. Have a look around to see what they are making and then price it lower than that and see how you get on.

Enda, I guess I was trying to get a handle on what reduced would mean in money terms in this situation.

Thanks a million for the feedback lads, I’ll advertise it privately.

Try posting in the motors forum saying you have a mercedes for quick sale with only 40k km on the clock... Oh wait, you just did.

Go into all the hair dressers, beauticians etc and ask them if they want to buy a hair dressers car.

    The hairdressers love the CLA

no doubt what the dealers offer you will be an insult! I just re-read the first post. Definitely try and sell it privately and get it up asap, you can always use a dealer as last resort, if time runs out. Auction route could be a potential avenue too.

    Another quality contribution.

OP, a dealer will offer you a low figure for it, probably lower than what you could sell it for privately. However the flip side is that with a car of that value it might be quicker and easier to sell it to a dealer. On a car of that value a private individual maybe seeking finance who won't lend to buy privately and the buyer may also want warranty peace of mind.

I think any quality dealer will not give you more that 15k for it! Thats also being generous.

Brexit has a lot to answer for as sales are in the toilet and that car is about to be 5 years old!!
