Hah! I knew that would draw the punters in.

I first encountered Mad_Lad several years ago in the Motors forum and his knowledge of and passion for EVs was hugely impressive. I reckoned he was getting huge value for money from his EV, not to mention great driving pleasure from the smooth drive and instant torque. For a long time I wondered what make of EV he was driving until the horrifying realisation dawned..... none !!

I blocked him out of my life for a good while due to that disappointment but in the early months of 2015 I ventured into the Motors forum again and discovered the "Guess what Mad_Lad bought" thread which revealed that he was finally putting his money where his mouth was!

So after following his exploits for a while I took the plunge in April 2015 and purchased a new 151 Leaf XE which involved trading in my 11 year old 1.8 petrol for scrappage. Massive savings in fuel, motor tax, maintenance and cheaper insurance followed.

Mad_Lad, you'll always have a special place in my heart but I've had my head slowly turned by this other poster named unkel. So much so that it culminated in me selling the Leaf and buying a 191 Ioniq in early July. So, I'm off to the Ioniq thread now to update that.

    Thanks, Mad_Lad! :D:D

    Haha ye mad "lad" :D

Glad I was of some inspiration ;)

Yes, the Ioniq is a nice car compared to the Leaf well wear ! :D

5 years driving EV now, I'd never go back.

If I were to do a rough estimate over 5 years I probably saved around 8,000 in fuel costs calculating in the cost of electricity and Petrol in the Rex and I am saving more now with work charging.

One thing is for certain, I will never go back to ICE !!!

    21,200 for Leaf

    26,488 for i3

total would be 47,688 next November, where do you get your 70 K ? sure , if I decide to keep the i3 I will have to pay the balloon that has to be factored in but once I own it it will cost me almost nothing to drive.

Yes cars cost a lot of money that's why I'm half contemplating keeping the i3 just as a commuter car.

I could have bought diesels either and it would have cost me a lot more like all the other folk buying brand new diesels, they are paying a lot more for their commute because I can charge at work, they can't .

When you pay that balloon it's close to 70k?

    Thats where it came from

ok then no, 21 K for Leaf + payments for i3 + balloon add up to 52.5 K Euro's. Cost of a model 3 with some extras.

But what is the point you are trying to make ? buying new cars is mad ? well could have been worse, I got a cracking deal on the i3, 35,500 , would have been about 55 K if I got it new. Leaf I paid for 3 years not full price because I got it on PCP.

Could have been worse, I could have spent the money on a Diesel Golf DSG and spent a lot more on diesel and I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as I enjoy the i3.

But, it might be time to stop paying for cars for a couple of years.

He went for a Leaf back in 2015. Back then it was the only reasonable value for money EV

Just now he has upgraded to an Ioniq. Probably the best value for money EV you can get today
