Recommend a runabout for elderly lady

(My mum would kill me if she knew I called her an elderly lady, but nevertheless... :))

Budget: €2-2.5k or so, ideally <€300 tax

Looking for a low hassle, reliable car to do medium distance mileage in rural Mayo.

She's coming from a background of driving 2L Mondeo, Superb recently, and even a J40 Landcruiser back in the day, so I know she'd prefer something bigger than a supermini, maybe something in the Auris/Civic class.

I think we're looking at dealers only, and ideally those based in Connacht, Dublin at a stretch.

Any recommendations for specific models/years or even specific cars? Thanks for your help.

1.8 petrol Civic is the way to go

Wouldn't the Civic be a bit low down and possibly difficult to get into for an elderly person? The Jazz be taller and access in and out might be easier.

OP, on a budget of 2.5k your just not going to get much in the way of value or comeback from a dealer.

Thanks folks, appreciate the input. I think she's ok with the height, but something higher wouldn't hurt.

I was looking at Toyotas in that price range, found this Avensis - I know it's a DL car, but pretty much eveything else looks decent, any thoughts?

Would she not be better with an auto ?

Fairly high mileage on that car so you could be looking at replacing end of service life parts on that car in the short term, is your mum ok with that?

Pretty much everything I've looked at so far is high mileage - 10 year old diesels are naturally going to be 180-200k miles surely. I was thinking that something like an Avensis is more capable of that than others. If there are some low mileage options in the price range I'm happy to look at them.

I know only too well but you are really depending on how the individual car was cared for over the past 10 years. Even that aside there are still consumables that can cost a fair chunk of change to replace at that age and mileage.

A Renault fluence would be worth considering. This one could be a bit of a hidden gem. I'd imagine the price is due another drop too.

You won't get much from a west of Ireland dealer in cheap tax range for €2500
