Delay VRT Until January

    Hi,

I am thinking of buying a car in the UK in the next couple of weeks, but would like to delay importing/making the appointment to pay VRT until January. I believe that the customs often go by the computer system, which is directly related to the current yesr and year of the car. So, paying VRT in January vs November/December could be a difference of 20% of the total VRT due.

To delay paying VRT, I think that these are my options:

    1. Buy the car and leave it in the UK until January
    2. Buy the car, bring it over in November and wait until January to make the
appointment. I would have to pay a fine equal to:

(number of days late) x (VRT) x 0.001

In this case, do they back date the VRT price to what it was at the time of
    import?

Do they really have a records of ferries and are able to check when it came in on a ferry?

    Thanks,
    Larry

What car are you thinking of importing? There will be carbon tax after January which may out weigh the savings. I bought a car in December and the VRT dropped 20% over night once January came and I made a saving. I didn’t delay it tho I just naturally bought it at the end of December. If you can’t prove when the car entered the state they assume it has been in the country since the day the tax ran out in the UK. Happened to me before when I didn’t have a ferry ticket. So in theory if you bought a car taxed in the UK until December you may not pay any fines if you VRT in January without providing shipping details. I still wouldn’t recommend this tho. If you want to pay January VRT prices then just buy the car in December, not now. Prices will be slightly cheaper then anyway and at least your doing things legitimately this way

Thanks for your reply and insights. The car I'm interested in is a 2.0 litre petrol with emissions of 170 g/km. I was thinking of bringing the car over on the ferry, park it up in the garage and wait until January to register. I could possibly just buy another ferry ticket in late December/ early January. I'm not sure it it would pop up on their system though once I bring it in on the ferry the 1st time. Or do they just go on ferry ticket and/or ferry ticket receipt?

I'm no fan of VRT, but you don't want to be trying to fool Revenue. Absolutely isn't worth the hassle for a few hundred quid.

They look for proof of entry, ie the boat ticket. If bought in norn iron a receipt of purchase will do.

There'll be the new NOx tax on the car in Jan and there could also be import duty and VAT to be paid. Could be a lot more expensive to get on the road here in Jan than now.

    That makes sens, thanks Martin.

Yes, wise words Kevin. I might just leave it in the garage in the UK until December.

They should really update their system to make it more of a gradual depreciation than 1 big jump per year. From reading posts here, they just use the calculator on the website, so that one day of difference (December 31st to January 1st) could make a difference of thousands.

I've been monitoring the Brexit situation very closely and am aware of the VAT situation. This will only apply if there is a no deal Brexit.. but if that came to pass, I would definitely be making the appointment ASAP!

I don't think NOx emissions will affect petrol cars very much.. seems to be more diesel cars that will be hit with that.

    Thanks

They are making a deal to leave the Customs union and will become a third country, VAT will be due. If you buy up North it may be avoidable but that depends on what deal they make.

Where can you find out the rates that are going to be charged for this ?

There is a calculator online but I can’t remember the link off hand

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/economy/budget-2020-new-emissions-tax-on-new-cars-and-used-imports-1.4043840?mode=amp

This article explains it. It could add another couple of hundred quid to the import after it kicks in in Jan

With Brexit uncertainty and the additional charge in Jan, it might be just easier to get it now

The customs have acess to ANPR cameras in Dublin Port and can cross reference database to see if vehicle was in state before date declared. Be careful.
