Buzzard remains found

Walking across a local field this morning and found the remains of what looks like a Common Buzzard. Judging by the remains, it may have been there for several weeks. I found a red coloured ring nearby. There has been a breeding pair of Common Buzzards in this area for years, but curiously haven't seen or heard them in a while. Seems a tad suspicious to me.

I'd pass on the info to Birdwatch Ireland, where are you based?

The likely outcome of contacting Birdwatch Ireland would be what? An investigation, or just the recording of the death of Common Buzzard 557-D?

At the very least it'll be recorded and it will help keep track of numbers.

It's not a Buzzard, it's from a large gull. The Irish Midlands Ringing Group use rings of that colour/code format - email grprole@sky.com to let him know, please!

I've actually seen this gull before - wherabouts did you find its remains?

Edit: Just to say, it's always worth reporting any ringed birds that you find (alive or dead) - they're part of studies, part of which is to monitor survival rates, movements etc., so all that info is valuable - even if they're the final movements/wherabouts of a bird!

I might give the Irish Raptor Study Group a shout too to see if they have a record of this bird. Thanks.

Edit: OYE has informed me it's not a Common Buzzard.

    Thanks OYE.
Glad it's not a Common Buzzard.
I found it in a field just outside Newbridge in Co. Kildare.
I'll email your friend in the Irish Midlands Ringing Group this evening when I get home from work.

Just got back an email from the Irish Midlands Ringing Group, who were grateful for the information I provided. I was sent a life history of this bird which was a juvenile Great Black-backed Gull. The bird was ringed on Ireland's Eye in July of this year, and last spotted alive in Bray Harbour on the 6th of September.

    It's a small world OYE! ;)
