Yaris v Corolla first car

So I'm getting my first car and looking for some advice. I see that Toyota Corollas are recommended a lot here. I'd like to know if a Yaris would be recommended? My main concern is running costs and reliability (not wanting to be spending money on repairs) and my budget is €2,000.

The 1.0 liter engine on the Yaris would be more economical on fuel than the 1.4 on the Corolla (I'd be using it for city driving and about 5,000k per year).

    Tax - €199 (Yaris) v €385 (Corolla)

And insurance quotes are about €120 cheaper for the Yaris.

Depreciation: Would the Corolla depreciate less seen as they are presumably more sought after? (I might only be hanging onto the car for a year).

And I'd welcome suggestions for other cars if anyone thinks id be better off with something different, thanks!

Yaris is a grand car and super reliable. Never heard a bad word about them.

you might want to keep it longer.

    Corolla is equally as good.

You won't go wrong with either.

The only advantage of the corolla is it is bigger boot and more space if you frequently need to carry people and/or stuff.

both are toytoas so not much to go wrong, thou vvti engine would be better on corolla, not sure if yaris 1l has one, plus more space.

    other options mazda 2-3,honda civic.
or smth different but still fun micra 1.2 or suzuki swift 1.2l both have a nice pull but inside is basically barebones at least on micra :D

as far as depreciation goes youll hardly get half of your money back, on 2k car doesnt matter what you get, if honest.

How important is resale value on a car only costing you 2k?

I'm a student and am financing the car myself, so I'm just looking at every financial aspect of purchasing my first car. If there was €100-200 in the difference between how much each car would depreciate, that would be a factor I would take into consideration on deciding which car to go for.

I appreciate that but car ownership costs money either way. However a 2k car has already suffered most of it's depreciation at this stage so I wouldn't be too hung up on it. Your average newer car will lose many times that in a year. It will lose some money in a year's time but not a big amount, if you want to offset further depreciation then just drive it into the ground rather than only keeping it for 12 months.

You can avoid the whole issue of depreciation and come out trumps if you buy the right car for your needs and then just keep driving it into the ground until it's fúcked. You will probably get several years out of it before that. Lets say 4 years before it is worthless. Then it is only costing you 500 a year. That is cheap motoring.

If you get the corolla so it has a bit of room and is more useful for bringing people and stuff on longer journeys. With yaris you are a bit restricted, especially for longer journeys.

Depreciation on a really old car is not a real factor. How good you are at maintaining and buying the car cheap and selling the car for good money is the real decider.
