Heading to the UK tomorrow night to pick up a 2016 Leaf 30Kw. My planned route is attached. Just copped that the Chademo Ecotricity charges will only take the charge to 80%. My plan was to stop at the yellow stops and use white as Plan B. Will I be cutting it fine on the 60 mile plus journeys. Time is not an issue as I've a long wait in Fishguard regardless..

Should be fine really, but I wouldn't drive at 80-90mph on the motorways like most people over there do :)

Your longest hop is 69 miles. That's 111km. Even with 80% charge that implies a 100% range of just 138km. Easy peasy at Leaf Speed (100km/h indicated) on a good day and not that cold yet?

Good luck with your trip and keep us updated when you are bored / waiting at a charger tomorrow :D

What's the trim level and how much are you paying for it?

Be aware that the chargers at Membury services are very unreliable for some reason.

Instead of leaving the M4 to get to Ikea, consider Reading services or Chievely services. Both on the M4 before Membury heading West.

Is that a Chademo thing that they only charge to 80%? I've charged an Ioniq to 94% (the max an Ioniq will charge to on DC) on Ecotricity CCS.

I noticed that you have listed a Polar chargepoint. Do you have a polar account or are you planning to use the Instant app? If the latter, you have to load it with £20 before you can use it. If the charge fails, you won't get the money back. The main networks that I use on that route are Ecotricity, Instavolt (Bannatynes gyms in Newport and Cardiff) and Shell.

    Did you ABRP?
    https://abetterrouteplanner.com/?plan_uuid=04996a22-628f-4b28-bee8-883983a0847d

You can kind-of use it dynamically to plan stops as you make progression by planning from your existing location...
    I hope it helps.

I tried to plan a route on this a few times. The suggestions it makes for a route I know well are bizarre! Routing to chargers that I would never dream of going to and adding many kms to the journey, when there are perfectly good chargers on the shortest route. I eventually gave up on it .

I bought a 2016 Acenta with 28k miles 6.6Kw charging for £11,000. Will keep you posted on travel, although I'm travelling through the night....

Yes, ABRP was bjorked. They swapped out the routing engine on it in version 3.5.2.
I've been testing it and it's better now. Still some improvements can be made.

Yes, I setup a Polar account threw £10 in it but can add more handily enough if needed.

As regards the Chademo I believe it is a Chademo restriction that will only allow an 80% charge.

Not to my knowledge, just that its quite slow after 80% but it wont cut you off... unless they've changed their chargers in the UK since I was there.

Sweet deal! You will have very little depreciation on that car in the next few years. And very little other costs too :D

Definitely not a thing, it slows down after 80% but I used plenty of Ecotricity chargers to go to 100% in UK when bringing back a couple of Leafs. With so many chargers over there though and no queuing you’re generally better off just stopping as you come across chargers and move on at 80%.

Enjoy it, I loved doing these trips!

    +1

If only there was more of a price difference between UK and here for EVs like there was up to about a year ago, and I would be over regularly.

Buy car over there, bring it home, have a bit of fun with it and after a while maybe a few months, maybe a year, sell it on with a small profit. Free motoring

Make it to Fishguard just now....battery got to 7 bars so I decided to wait after charging a couple of times for it to cool down a bit...didn’t make my hotel for a few hours sleep but managed a few hours here or there while charging....weather was horrendous in parts but I won’t worry about that now....great car, I’m well impressed with it....can’t wait to make use of the free charging in work and leave the 2.0 diesel at home with the wife 😉

Ha ha, a few weeks for now and ye will be trying to get out the door first to grab the Leaf, especially now we are in pre-heating times

Imo - for future trips if you do this again - I would just use leaf Spy for the temps.

7 bars is imo workable and no need to wait around to cool down.

Leaf 30 batteries can get nice and warm but shouldnt cause too much travel issues. Certainly not to the extend you get on a Leaf 40.

You shouldn't get any real issues on a journey below 54 degrees battery temp.

30 kwh deals with battery temps much better on a trip then the 40.

I certainly wouldn't be sleeping at a charge point at 7 bars.

Even at 54 degrees a 30 kwh should drop temp when you drive down the road.

Got a present in the post yesterday. A £100 parking fine for staying too long at a charging point. Must have been at the services where I had some kip while the car was charging. Ended up spending almost 3 hours there, middle of the night and no one around, my own fault regardless. Anyone know if they can pursue we for the fine in Ireland, I was just going to ignore it...

Is it a parking charge notice or a penalty charge notice - both are pcn's but the parking fine notice is a private company fine. You could dispute it as you where in the car (with ahhmmm.... car issues (not really on a leaf)). Or simply ignore if not going back to uk anytime soon.

One other thing, debt management companies have different rules in NI and ROI in that they can transfer the debt to a collection agency but you dont have to talk to the 3rd party debt agency.

How has the first month with the LEAF been then?

When driving in UK with a L24 a few years ago we overstayed at MSA due to running on fumes, and when we pulled in the charging bay had just been painted over. The workers said that it would take some hours for the acrylic mass to set so we just abandoned the car in a multistorey and walked to nearby town ignoring the 2 hour warning.

Never heards anything back as we had Irish reg.
