    Hi,
Looking to get a new mobile for my wife for Xmas- €150 max.
    Main use- browsing internet.

I see the Redmi Note 7 is €169, I'd pay the extra if really worth it but any other recommendations please? She's saying to spend €100 max but presume nothing decent for that price.

    Cheers,
    Pa.

Don't forget the Mi A3, fantastic phone for €145 (DHL 2 day delivery). Great camera and battery, fingerprint in display and comes with stock Android One so you get fast monthly updates.

How much of the 64gb storage has the system used up?

Not sure - but it's part of the android one program, so no bloatware and quick to get all updates.
And storage is expandable with micro SD card - though that makes it single sim (as you can only use micro SD OR second sim, not both)

It's an excellent phone, my wife has it. I have the Mi A2 and got about 6 family + friends to also get it. Great deal.

I'm going to wait for Black Friday deals, presume there'll be some decent discounts.

Then again, saw this Redmi Note 8 for €176 (which includes DHL delivery, seems a good price.

Can anyone confirm that this will work here, is it a case of just ensuring that you go for a 'global' version?
    Thanks,
    Pa.

That "DHL" delivery says 23-25 days. If you buy off Honorbuy, you'll get 2 day DHL shipping from Italy for €195 - that extra €19 will be worth it IMO.

Huawei definitely. Best phone for the price.

I bought a huawei for €99 before and it was unreal, on par with €300 phones. They're a very strong phone, great battery, very good camera, and just really fast over all.

And oh, you could literally drop them on tiles ten times and they won't break, really strong.

Screen size is not relevant to phone size, the bezel and chin affects it too. See the side by side of the G5S and Mi A3 below. It feels great in the hand.

Fantastic, very fast delivery from them. If you ordered on a Monday, it would arrive by DHL that Wednesday every time. Currently at €151 for the 64GB version and I can't see it going much cheaper to be honest as its usually up towards €200. Best to order before Black Friday to avoid any shipping delays.

Completely, it's an Android One phone so stock updates monthly from Google running Android 10.

Hi all, sorry to jump on the thread. I was reading your posts with interest, particularly the Android one info.
I myself have a Xiaomi Mi5, which I love and will probably upgrade in the new year.
Is there any phone you recommended that is smaller than 6" overall?, I saw Zweton mentioned this in his post.
Its for my Dad, an OAP, who hasnt used a smartphone before. I know that too big wont suit him. Mainly to be used for taking the odd photo, send a whats app and check a few apps/ webpage for match updates etc
    Thanks in advance

You should check out the Doro 8040. €160 from Vodafone. Aimed at exactly the person you are buying for.

There is a offer at the moment for the Huawei p30 lite for 150euros in carphonewarehouse. Highly recommend it as I'm going to get it myself actually, not only that you can get it for 99euros if you switch to Vodafone.

The specs for the phone is unreal for the price and hard to beat in fairness.

    ALL THE ABOVE

I've been using the p30 lite for 6 months and it's something else, picked one up today in Vodafone for 100euro for my wife, really is a no brainer at that price

Cheers for that. It is a great phone alright. It seems to come up at €149 with Vodafone, not €99.

The other issue is €20 a month- planning on changing to GOMO so €20 a month would be an extra €120.

The Redmi 8a seems like great value at €100. It doesn't have fingerprint on back, 2GB RAM 32GB ROM but that's what her current phone has & happy with it's performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,174 ✭✭✭piplip87

The Huawei P30 lite. Is 100 quid in Vodafone if you change your number over.

    4gb ram, serious camera ....

If you already with VF just order a Eir SIM and top it up by 5 use it for a day and you can switch that and keep your number

Ok have a chance to get a Samsung Galaxy A40. Anyone recommend?

Even for a basic phone these days, Id be looking at 4gb ram min. You could add extra storage with a micro SD but the 32gb would fill up with app data fairly lively. Im not sure about Xiaomi storage management and if you can move apps to the SD card?

    The 8 (no a) is 4GB RAM 64GB ROM

At the moment it's a toss up between that and the Redmi Note 7.

Buy it on the Vodafone website, only €99 if you port your number

Order a free sim from eir and use that as your number to port so you will still be free to use your own sim to port to Gomo
Phone is possibly locked to vodafone but unlock codes can be got from ebay for circa £20

Cheers, just need my new Eir sim to arrive.
Or can I provide my current mobile number (that I use) & select 'Select switch date and time' for a week or 2 in the future, then call them when new sim arrives?

Not sure about that, when did you order sim. I got mine in 2 days from ordering

I called into Vodafone, they said if call into store they call your sim number to make sure it works/is valid.

If I buy a new sim from Eir, how can I avoid above scenario? I already have an Eir active sim.
    Thanks,
    Pa.

just have it in the phone at the time! if it's pay as you go sim it can be active and not registered to a name or make up a fake name/email combo if required

hhhhmmmm, ordered on Nov 28th, still in status 'Your order is due for dispatch'

I know that it was out of stock & then back in stock online. Used online chat with Vodafone & they said it's ready for dispatch but I won't be reassured until updated that it's in the post
