IT contract work in Europe - Tax take ?

I have done IT contract work in Ireland and there is no doubt that it is very advantageous from a tax take POV.
Ignoring all the other negative aspects like no holidays, no sick pay etc etc I have found it certainly worth while from the take home pay side.

I was just wondering if anyone has experience in IT contracting in Europe and how does that differ ?

Does one pay more tax ?
Are the same things deductable ?
Are "umbrella director" or whatever they are called prevalent or even legal ?

I see some good contracts in places like Germany or Belgium with good daily rates, but I'm not sure if at the end of the day does that translate after tax etc.
